Meet Lewy's Legion's Fab Five

May 14, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) - Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

On the ice and behind the scenes, the gentlemen pictured above volunteered an incredible amount of time this season to Lewiston MAINEiacs hockey. You may have seen them out waving to traffic on game day, at the Crystal Lake Fishing Derby (up to their knees in water as the ice submerged), driving the vehicle on the ice for Score-O, assembling and dismantling the pregame and postgame show setup in the Shipyard Lounge, or manning the MAINEiacs display at area eateries and at the recent job fair. They also assisted in decorating for the end of season banquet with fellow Lewy's Legion members, helping with the broken glass in game four against Saint john, and inflating the arch that the players skate through at the start of each home game.

While these guys certainly love hockey, each one of them came to volunteer this year for a different reason. Ken Walsh sincerely proclaims, "I've been a MAINEiacs fan since the day I was born," and then admits that the infamous "O' Come All Ye Hateful" game against Baie-Comeau in December of 2003 hooked him for good. Jeremy Caron and Matt Conklin connected with Lewy's Legion after Rob Mainville needed assistance with the video feed at the first Road Warrior Party at Gippers in December. Tony Richard played hockey himself, and he and Shawn Langlois have always been around the game, so they were willing volunteers. At least three of the five have been mistaken for MAINEiacs players, and while they did set the record straight in the moment, they are always proud to represent the team in the community.

Volunteering has provided these fans with the opportunities to meet the players who wear the blue, orange, and black with pride. The group's unanimous choice for a favorite player is Kirill Kabanov, while additional praise went the way of Christophe Lalonde, Cameron Critchlow, and Sam Finn. When speaking about Lalonde, Ken mentioned, "He plays bigger than his body size." In fact, if you ask these five about hockey, they can talk about players from the QMJHL, right through to the NHL. However, in case you were hoping for clarfication on the words that players trade in the penalty box (their seats are located near the glass just next to the penalty boxes), Tony insisted that he just can't boil down the R-rated version. Jeremy said that Eric Gelinas of Saint John and Jeremy Gouchie of Montreal are pretty chatty from the box, and that Ian Saab is strong in that department from the MAINEiacs.

Between now and training camp in August, these gentlemen are watching hockey game re-runs, counting down the days until the players return, and doing their part to promote season tickets for the 2011-12 campaign. When asked what, other than MAINEiacs hockey, they would prefer to be doing in L/A, Jeremy breaks the gaping, silent pause with, "Truthfully' Nothing!"

Rapid Recall - Favorite Moment from the 2010-11 Season

Ken: Sam Finn's victorious fight during the playoffs

Shawn: Four fights in 2:35 against Cape Breton on February 5th

Tony: Christophe Lalonde stepped up to fight William Carrier on February 5th against Cape Breton

Matt: Taking the place of the visiting penalty box attendant, when said attendant was ejected on March 13th against Gatineau

Jeremy: Matt falling down, and Tony almost biting it while rolling out the red carpet prior to the game

All: DJ Abisalih's call of Etienne Brodeur's game winning goal with 5.2 seconds left in game three against Montreal

Many thanks to Jeremy, Matt, Ken, Tony, and Shawn for their time and efforts this season. Lewy's Legion appreciates every volunteer, and looks forward to doing some more outstanding work during the 2011-12 season.

On Friday night, Lewy checked out game five of the President's Cup Final between the Saint John Sea Dogs and Gatineau Olympiques. The Olympiques picked up a 3-2 win at Harbour Station, extending the series to game six at Centre Robert Guertin on Sunday night. Saint John currently leads the series, 3-2. The winner of this series will join the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors, Owen Sound Attack, and Kootenay Ice at the Mastercard Memorial Cup next week.

Following the game, Lewy focused his attention on his beloved Boston Red Sox, who picked up a 5-4 win over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox and Yankees will meet up again tonight, while the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning will open their best-of-seven Eastern Conference Final series at TD Garden. QMJHL alumni in the series include: Boston's Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, Brad Marchand, and Michael Ryder, as well as Tampa Bay's Marc-Andre Bergeron, Simon Gagne, Vincent Lecavalier, Marc-Antoine Pouliot, and Mathieu Roy.

On Thursday night, MAINEiacs President and Governor Bill Schurman accepted a community service award on behalf of the organization by the Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care Program at the Multi Purpose Center. During the 2010-11 season, MAINEiacs players attended classes and read stories to the students at various times, while also providing tickets through the Country Kitchen Bread Box program for parents and students to attend a MAINEiacs home game. Parent/student surveys indicated that the visits by the team and attending the games were chosen as the year's top highlights!
