 Tulsa Drillers

Long Night of Baseball Ends in a Split for Drillers

May 13, 2011 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release

After playing 14 innings in the opening game of a doubleheader Thursday night, the Tulsa Drillers needed a strong outing from their starting pitcher in game two, and they got it from Josh Sullivan. Despite not taking the mound until after 10:30PM, and pitching in front of large contingent of family and friends, the Little Rock native blanked the Travs through 4 2/3 innings, allowing the Drillers to gain a 4-1 win and a split of a marthon doubleheader.

In the opening game, the Travs posted a 2-1 win. It took nearly four hours to complete the contest.

In game two, Arkansas starter Andrew Taylor matched Sullivan until running into trouble in the fifth. With the game scoreless, Thomas Field singled off Taylor with one out in the top of the fifth. Playing in his first game of the season, Mike Mitchell brought Field home with the game's first run on a double to the wall in left field. Catcher Lars Davis followed with his second homer of the season to put Tulsa in front 3-0.

In the sixth, the Drillers increased the lead to four runs when Darin Holcomb doubled and scored on a base hit by Scott Beerer.

A streak of wildness in the bottom of the fifth kept Sullivan from pitching the necessary five innings to gain the win. The right-hander walked the bases loaded with two outs, forcing manager Duane Espy to call on Dustin Molleken from the bullpen. Molleken escaped the threat by retiring Dillon Baird on a grounder.

He retired the Travs in order in the sixth inning, but surrendered consecutive hits to open the seventh and final inning. With runners at second and third, Tulsa closer Adam Jorgenson entered and walked Mike Trout to load the bases. Darwin Perez produced a sacrifice fly to end the shutout, but Jorgenson enticed Roberto Lopez to hit into a game ending double play to preserve the win and record his ninth save of the year.

Tulsa and Arkansas will play game three of their five-game series Friday night. The Drillers were unsure of their starting pitcher, but it is likely to be Christian Friedrich (2-2, 6.16 ERA). The Travelers will send Orangel Arenas (4-0, 2.76) to the mound with first pitch scheduled for 7:10PM.
