Sea Dogs Win Series, Taking Game Four, 6-5

April 28, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) - Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - A thrilling journey that began back at the start of training camp in August came to an end on Wednesday night. The Lewiston MAINEiacs played game four of their third round playoff series against the Saint John Sea Dogs, and fell short, 6-5, as Saint John netted the winning goal in the final three minutes of regulation. WIth the victory, the Sea Dogs won the series 4-0, and advanced to the President's Cup Final for the second straight year.

The MAINEiacs got off to a red hot start in the first period, scoring three goals while the game was barely five minutes old. Cameron Critchlow put the home team on the board first, intercepting a clearing attempt by Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault, before scoring into a mostly empty net. A little more than a minute later, Lewiston struck again, as Alex Zafiris deflected Sam Carrier's point shot into the back of the cage, ending Corbeil-Theriault's night immediately.

After a goaltending change and a break in the action due to broken glass, the MAINEiacs lit the lamp again. Olivier Dame-Malka took a wrist shot from the left point, keeping it on the ice to beat Jacob DeSerres. The Sea Dogs got one back about two minutes later, as a great individual effort by Zack Phillips made the score 3-1 after 20 minutes of play.

Early in the second period, Saint John cut into the deficit again, as Nathan Beaulieu wired home a slap shot from the right point on the man advantage. 1:16 later, Lewiston regained their two-goal lead, as Stefan Fournier finished off Kirill Kabanov's centering pass from behind the net. However, the Sea Dogs responded shortly after, as Scott Oke chipped a puck in from the right side of the crease, bringing the visitors within one with 14:38 to go in the middle frame. Later in the period, Saint John evened the score, as Jonathan Huberdeau scored on a breakaway, sending the contest into the second intermission tied at four.

After Steven Anthony was denied by Andrey Makarov on a penalty shot to start the third period, the Sea Dogs ultimately took the lead 4:35 in. Former MAINEiac Eric Gelinas rifled in a one-timer from the right point, giving the visitors their first lead of the night. 1:12 later, Lewiston answered, as Pierre-Olivier Morin deflected a pass through DeSerres' legs, bringing the score back to a tie.

With 2:52 remaining in regulation, Saint John went ahead for good, as Stephen MacAulay netted his second winning goal of the series, tapping in a loose puck at the side of the goal. The MAINEiacs had a few chances late in the contest, but were unable to cash in, as the Sea Dogs won the game and the series.

Jacob DeSerres picked up the win for Saint John, stopping 25 of the 28 shots he faced, after taking over for Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault, who was beaten on both of the shots he faced. Andrey Makarov made 31 saves on 37 shots for Lewiston, but suffered the loss.

Lewiston finished the 2010-11 season by going 40-24-1-3 in the regular season, before an 8-7 run through the playoffs, defeating Moncton and Montreal.

The Lewiston MAINEiacs would like to thank everyone for their tremendous support all season long, and are looking forward to a thrilling 2011-12 season!
