Altoona Curve News Release
HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Curve used an 11th-inning RBI single from Tony Sanchez to drive in Starling Marte from third and claim victory over the Senators, 6-5, on Wednesday night at Metro Bank Park. The game was sent to extras after the Senators scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at five.
The 11th began when Marte singled to right field off reliever Hassan Pena (0-1). Pena was preoccupied with Marte at first and on his second throw over he threw it away and Marte got up and scampered down to second base. Tyler Moore tried to throw Marte out at second and threw the ball in to shallow left field, which allowed Marte to get up and go to third.
Pena followed the two-error pay by hitting Jordy Mercer to put runners at the corners. Sanchez found his first hit of the game as he singled past a drawn in Adam Fox at third base to bring home Marte and the game's deciding run. Anthony Claggett (2-0), who pitched a scoreless 10th, also worked the 11th and earned his second win of the road trip.
Altoona seemed to have the game in control going into the late innings as they led, 5-0, thanks to a five-inning, shutout performance by Jared Hughes and five extra-base hits.
Hughes tossed four scoreless innings before Altoona gave him some run support in the fifth. Marte, who'd singled in the first inning, grounded out to bring home Brad Chalk for the game's first run. With a one-run lead, Hughes returned to the hill for a shut-down fifth as he retired the side in order to end his outing. All told, the right hander gave up five hits over five innings and struck out four.
Altoona chased Senators starter Ryan Tatusko in the sixth with two away when they used run-scoring hits by Jeremy Farrell, Chalk and Jose Hernandez to open up a 4-0 lead. Miles Durham added an RBI double in the seventh to make it, 5-0, before Harrisburg scored five unanswered runs over the eighth and ninth innings off of the Curve bullpen.
Holt, Marte, Durham, Farrell and Chalk all had multi-hit games in the win for Altoona.
Once again at the .500 mark, Altoona (9-9) will try to climb above .500 with a win on Thursday morning at Metro Bank Park. Mike Colla (1-0, 4.00) will make his first start as a professional in a spot start for the Curve while RHP Brad Peacock (2-1, 1.59) throws for the Senators in the 10:30 a.m. game.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 10 a.m.
