Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Bowling Green starting pitcher Enny Romero combined with two relievers on a three-hit shutout as the Hot Rods defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-0 on Thursday night in the Midwest League season opener for both clubs. A crowd of 8,058 attended the game at Fifth Third Field.

Romero worked the first five innings and allowed just two men to reach base. The only hit he allowed came to the first batter he faced, Dragons lead-off man Billy Hamilton in the first inning, and Romero gave up a fourth inning walk. He struck out eight batters featuring a fastball in the mid-90's. Relievers Steve Hiscock and Austin Hubbard combined to work the final four innings, allowing just hits.

Dayton starting pitcher Josh Smith was outstanding in a losing cause. He worked six innings and allowed just two hits and one walk with nine strikeouts. Smith surrendered two runs including a solo home run to Nick Schwaner. One of the runs was unearned.

Dragons reliever Tim Crabbe enjoyed a strong outing, striking out the first four batters he faced over two scoreless innings.

The Hot Rods took advantage of a three-base error by Dragons right fielder Juan Duran on a dropped fly ball in the fourth, leading to the first run of the game. Schwaner's solo homer in the fifth extended the Bowling Green lead to 2-0. Derek Dietrich hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Dragons reliever Porfirio Martinez to close out the scoring.

Hamilton, Yorman Rodriguez, and Tucker Barnhart each had hits for Dayton. All three hits were singles.

Dayton will host Bowling Green at Fifth Third Field on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the second game of the season for both clubs. Daniel Corcino, a 20-year-old right-hander who is regarded by many as the top pitching prospect on the Dayton staff, will start for the Dragons.

Notes: Hamilton, who led the entire Reds organization in stolen bases last season, swiped his first base of the year in the first inning when he stole second after his lead-off single...Barnhart threw out both Bowling Green attempted base stealers...Smith struck out five of the first seven batters he faced.
