Whitecaps to Offer Kosher Hot Dog Cart in 2011
April 7, 2011 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Over the off-season, the West Michigan Whitecaps added Hebrew National kosher hot dogs to the concessions menu at Fifth Third Ballpark, one of a series of upgrades to the food and beverage selection available to fans.
Now, as the team embarks on its 18th season, the new menu item has opened the door for an entirely kosher hot dog cart that will make the ballpark an even more hospitable destination for West Michigan's Jewish community.
"We pride ourselves in offering affordable family fun to all of the people of West Michigan, so when we saw an opportunity to add this amenity we wanted to take advantage of it," said Whitecaps' President Scott Lane. "It's well worth the added investment to make life at the ballpark that much more welcoming and comfortable to the local Jewish community."
Over the last few weeks, Whitecaps' Director of Food and Beverage Matt Timon has been working with Rabbi David Krishef of Grand Rapid's Congregation Ahavas Israel to ensure the new hot dog cart meets all of the necessary criteria. Prior to Wednesday's exhibition game against Grand Valley State University - the first baseball event of the season at Fifth Third Ballpark - Rabbi Krishef visited the ballpark to formally approve the cart and its contents as being in accordance with Jewish dietary law.
"The Jewish community appreciates the interest of the Whitecaps in providing kosher hot dogs and kosher food," said Krishef. "I know a few major league baseball parks that offer kosher hot dogs, but this is the only minor league park that I know of that offers kosher hot dogs. I know there are people that are not Jewish that prefer to eat kosher food, and this will be a service to them as well."
The Midwest League regular season starts Thursday with a three-game road series in Lansing before the 'Caps open the home portion of their schedule against the Lugnuts with a 1:00 p.m. start on Sunday, April 10, at Fifth Third Ballpark. Gates will open early at 11:00 a.m. for the home-opener, which will feature a Knit Hat giveaway for the first 1,000 fans courtesy of Fifth Third Bank as well as Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Family Day festivities including Bob Evans kids-run-the-bases post-game. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting whitecapsbaseball.com.
