Worcester Sharks News Release

WORCESTER - Worcester Sharks President Michael A. Mudd has announced that Nick Petrecki has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Worcester community during the 2010-11 season.

The second year professional has taken the initiative to go above and beyond in regards to community outreach and has established himself as a leader in the Worcester community.

Petrecki helped organize this year's 3rd Annual "Give Moore for the Holidays" Toy Drive as fellow defenseman; Mike Moore was on recall in San Jose. He rallied 100% of his teammates to participate by purchasing $3000 worth of toys for Children from Community Healthlink of Worcester and invited the recipients and their families to receive the gifts following the Sharks December 26th game. In addition, Nick collected out of pocket donations from his teammates and provided $1,000 and a Joe Thornton signed jersey to benefit paralyzed Norwood hockey player Matt Brown's foundation, Brownie Points.

The 21-year-old native of Schenectady, New York, has also become the lead spokesperson for the Worcester Sharks flagship community program, Reading is Cool. He has read books and spoken about the importance of reading to thousands of students throughout central Massachusetts and has endeared himself to local educators.

#29 organized a post game skate with Hockey Ministries to coincide with "Faith and Family Night". He actively sought to be involved in the Worcester Sharks season long Locks of Love campaign, ending with an on ice hair cutting ceremony involving two of his Worcester Sharks teammates.

A NCAA National Champion with the Boston College Eagles in 2008, Nick took the lead in this year's Sharks Community Service Day at the Columbus Park Elementary School of Worcester. He along with the Sharks players and staff spent the day renovating the school inside and out. In the end, over $10,000 in renovations were performed including a new street hockey court, two murals, and custom coat hangers and book shelves all painted teal, black and white.

Some of his 2010-11 achievements include:

* Organized and executed the "Give Moore for the Holidays" player toy drive

* Participated in season long "Locks of Love" Program

* Participated in 14 "Reading is Cool" appearances

* Made several visits to Worcester area hospitals

* Instructed two Worcester Sharks Street brigades (street hockey clinics)

* Appeared in over twenty Team Community appearances

In recognition of his efforts, Petrecki will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming Sharks home game.

Petrecki is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2010-11 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League in the coming weeks.
