Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, Maine - The Portland Pirates are proud to announce that Derek Whitmore has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Portland community during the 2010-11 season.

Whitmore, who captured the award for a third straight season with the Pirates, continues to have a positive impact in the community through his participation in numerous charitable endeavors.

The 26 year-old from Rochester, New York once again took a lead role in the Pirates Goals for Success Program and addressed more than 1,500 students during the course of the season encouraging them to set goals, eat and live healthy and to avoid the negative influences that they might encounter as they grow up.

In addition to his role in the Goals for Success Program, Whitmore also participated in a number of community activities during the course of the season including WJBQ's Cans for a Cure, Read Across America, Relay for Life of Greater Portland Fundraiser, Freeze Out Hunger and the 6th Annual Dine Around the World Food & Wine Tasting Extravaganza to support Gary's House.

Whitmore is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2010-11 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League in the coming weeks.
