Wheat King Award Winners Unveiled

March 20, 2011 - Western Hockey League (WHL) Brandon Wheat Kings

Brandon, Manitoba - 18-year old right-winger Mark Stone stole the spotlight Saturday night as the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings presented their 2011 Awards before, during and after their game against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors at Westman Place.

One of four Winnipeg products on this year's club, the Ottawa Senators' sixth round draft choice took home five trophies including the Meighen Haddad & Co. Most Valuable Player of the Year Trophy.

The first Wheat King to eclipse the 100-point mark since Eric Fehr turned the trick in 2005, was also named winner of the Manitoba Hydro Turk Broda Trophy that goes to the hockey club's Top Manitoba Born Player, the Keystone Centre John Scott Kent Sportsmanlike Player of the Year Award, the MTS Connect 3 Star Trophy as well as the Brandon Sun Scoring Title Trophy.

Stone finished the season with 37 goals and 106 points, while accumulating 28 minutes in penalties in 71 games.

Stone was one of only three players to win more than one trophy on Saturday. Veteran defenceman Ryley Miller was named winner of the UCT Dennis Truscott Most Improved Player of the Year Award as well as the Precision Toyota Unsung Hero of the Year.

The 53rd captain in franchise history, Shayne Wiebe was named the Wheat Kings' Top Graduating Player and winner of the Art Marshall Memorial Trophy. The 20-year old local product, who scored a career high 44 goals and 65 points in 72 games this season, also took home the Tri Star Screenprinting Hardest Working Player honour.

Other winners Saturday night included 19-year old center Paul Ciarelli (McDonalds Frank King Most Community Minded Player), rookie defenceman Jordan Fransoo (Maggie Janz Scholastic Player of the Year), Michael Ferland captured the Rob Stouffer Coca Cola Most Inspirational Player Award, 16-year old Grandview, Manitoba product Ryan Pulock was named winner of the Meyers Norris Penny Trophy (Rookie of the Year), veteran blueliner Brodie Melnychuk took home the Wheat Kings' Executive Trophy as Top Defenceman while Dallas Stars' first round draft choice Scott Glennie was named winner of the Shoppers Drug Mart Fans Choice Award.

A 19-year old Winnipeg native, Glennie finished second in team scoring this season with 35 goals and 91 points in 70 games. The 4-year WHL veteran also became the first Wheat King in seventeen years to surpass the 300-point plateau in his Western League career. A former second round bantam draft choice of the Wheat Kings, Glennie finished his fourth season in Brandon with career totals of 121 goals and 308 points.

Glennie is currently one of only eleven players to score more than 300 points in his Wheat Kings' career. He finished the year four points behind Dan Bonar, who currently occupies tenth place on the club's all time list.

The last Wheat King to reach the 300-point plateau was former captain Marty Murray. The former WHL Player of the Year and Calgary Flames' draft choice attended Saturday night's game and was one of the many presenters on hand.

In addition to his Awards Night duties, the former Philadelphia Flyer was the guest speaker at the Bantam Final Four Provincial Championship Banquet at the Keystone Centre.

As for the game itself, the Wheat Kings outscored Moose Jaw 8-4 to bring the curtain down on their 2010-11 regular season schedule. Brandon will now play the Medicine Hat Tigers in their best of seven opening round playoff series.

Brandon finished the season with a record of 32-31-1-8 and are off to the playoffs for the eleventh consecutive season.
