Bakersfield Trips up Alaska 4-3

March 17, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

Michael Gergen had two goals and defenseman Tyler Gotto broke a tie game with less than five minutes left as the Alaska Aces fell to the Bakersfield Condors 4-3 to snap their six-game winning streak from Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield, CA on Wednesday night. Bakersfield's win extended their winning streak to a half dozen. It was just the second regulation loss suffered by Alaska in the last 15 games. The Aces remain six points ahead of Las Vegas for the top seed in the Western Conference, and tied with the Reading Royals for the most points in the ECHL. Alaska's record dropped to 39-21-4 on the year. The Aces now continue their five-game road trip, with a return trip to Las Vegas where they'll face the Wranglers on Friday, Saturday, and next Tuesday. The Aces started strong when Wes Goldie scored his league-leading 39th of the year shorthanded at 4:40. Alaska made it 2-0 when Garry Nunn tallied from the bottom of the slot at 11:21. Bakersfield came back into the game with a pair of quick strikes. First J.M. Beaudoin's shot from the left point found a path through a screen to get the Condors on the board at 16:26. 80 seconds later on a Bakersfield power play, Adam Naglich powered a shot that trickled through the legs of Adam Courchaine and into the net to tie the score 2-2 after one period. The Aces outshot the Condors 13-6 in the frame.

The Condors scored their third in a row in the second period at 7:56 to claim their first lead of the game when Michael Gergen scored off a rebound from the end wall. Courchaine appeared to tweak something on the play, and came out of the game following the next shift. Alaska evened the score at 3-3 when Curtis Fraser scored for the second straight game, slamming home a rebound at the left side of the net at 12:07. Both teams had 12 shots in the period.

The descisive goal came 15:05 into the third period after an Aces giveaway inside their own zone. Guillaume Lefebve found a cutting Tyler Gotto in the slot and he buried the shot for the game-winning goal.

Adam Courchaine started the game, playing 29 minutes, making 8 saves on 11 shots, and did not figure into the decision. Gerald Coleman (24-14-1) suffered a tough luck loss in relief, making 26 saves on 27 shots for the win. Brian Stewart (15-5) earned the win, making 32 saves on 35 shots. The Aces power play went 0-3, while the Condors went 1-3. The Aces outshot the Condors 35-28 in the game.

The Aces now continue their five-game road trip, with a return trip to Las Vegas where they'll face the Wranglers on Friday, Saturday, and next Tuesday. For the most up-to-date team and promotional information, please visit the Aces on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/#!/alaskaaceshockey
