Landmesser, RiverKings Shoot Down Gems

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- Derek Landmesser's goal in the eighth round of the shootout gave the Mississippi RiverKings a 3-2 victory over the Dayton Gems in Central Hockey League play on Thursday, March 10th at Southaven's DeSoto Civic Center.

Mississippi opened the scoring in the game early in the first period, when Matt Summers scored his 25th goal of the year at 2:23 for a 1-0 lead. Darrell Stoddard and Nathan Lutz assisted on the goal.

Dayton tied the game later in the period on a power play goal from Nathan Oke at 13:18, his sixth of the season and second power play goal.

In the second period, Dayton took the lead with a power play goal, deflected into the net by Chris Lipsett at 7:45. Lipsett netted his 16th goal of the season and his fourth power play goal on the play.

But, the RiverKings came back early in the third period to tie the game on a power play goal scored by Chris Richards at 1:11 of the final session. Richards' goal was his 17th of the season and came on feeds from Summers and Rusty Masters to knot the contest at 2-2, heading into overtime and the resulting shootout.

In the shootout, Summers and Brett Lutes exchanged goals in the third round, followed by no further scoring until Landmesser scored in the eighth round. Goaltender Alexander Pechurskiy stopped the final attempt by Jonathan Ornelas to seal the victory.

Pechurskiy stopped 26 shots in posting his 14th victory of the season (14-11-2), while Dayton goaltender Derek McIntyre fell to 6-7-1 with a 35-save performance.

The RiverKings were 1-for-8 on the power play, while the Gems finished 2-for-7.

With the victory, Mississippi improved to 26-27-5 for the season and leapfrogged over Odessa back into fifth place in the CHL Berry Conference. Dayton was denied clinching a Turner Conference playoff spot and fell to 28-25-5.
