Hamilton Bulldogs News Release


The Hamilton Bulldogs (American Hockey League affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens) will begin a four game home-stand this week against the Rockford IceHogs (AHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks). The 'Dogs will face-off against the IceHogs on Wednesday, March 9th at 7:00 P.M. at Copps Coliseum. Following Wednesdays game the 'Dogs will face three different opponents in three consecutive days. On Friday, March 11th the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche) will make a trip to Hamilton for a 7:00 P.M. game. The Texas Stars (AHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars) will be next in line at Copps Coliseum as they will match-up against Hamilton on Saturday, March 12th at 4:00 P.M. The 'Dogs will conclude their week with North Division rival, the Rochester Americans (AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers). The Amerks will take on the 'Dogs on Sunday, March 13th at 4:00 P.M.

In Hamilton's first game this week, they battled the Milwaukee Admirals. Newcomer Nigel Dawes continued his success as a Bulldog netting the first three goals of the game for a natural hat-trick. Milwaukee responded with a goal from Teemu Laakso in the second period to make the game 3-1. The Admirals continued their surge potting two more goals before the period had ended, tying the game 3-3. Dany Masse regained the lead for the 'Dogs at 6:59 of the third, but the Admirals found a way to force the game into overtime with a goal from Gabriel Bourque. Captain Alex Henry took the game in his hands scoring a goal with only four seconds remaining in the extra frame giving the Bulldogs a 5-4 victory. Hamilton's final two games of the week came against North Division rival the Toronto Marlies. The first game of a home-and-home for the two clubs was played at Copps Coliseum. It was a hard fought battle between the two teams as the game was held scoreless until the 15:33 mark in the final stanza. Greg Scott scored for the Marlies giving them a 1-0 lead with only minutes to play in the period. Hamilton couldn't equalize losing by a final score of 2-0 after Scott tallied an empty net marker. The following day Hamilton made a trip down to Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. Olivier Fortier started the scoring for the 'Dogs netting his eighth goal of the season and giving the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead. In the second period Aaron Palushaj notched a goal to extend the lead for Hamilton to 2-0. Matt Caruana made it 2-1 before the middle frame ended and Joe Colborne added one in the third to force the game into overtime. Brendon Nash scored for the Bulldogs handing them a big 3-2 win and a spot atop the North Division.

BULLDOGS NOTES:

- The Bulldogs' power play sits sixth in the standings capitalizing on 20.3% of their chances with the man advantage.

- G Curtis Sanford sits second in the AHL for goals-against-average with 1.93 and is tied for first in the league in save percentage with .930SV%. Sanford is also tied in second for the league lead in shutouts with five.

- LW Nigel Dawes was acquired by the Montreal Canadiens on February 24th along with Brent Sopel in exchange for Ben Maxwell and a fourth round draft pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Dawes scored a goal in each of his first four games with Hamilton which included a hat-trick against the Admirals on March 2nd. Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Marlies was the first time in eight games that he had not recorded goal or a point. His eight-game goal streak is a league-high for the season and he also ranks first in the AHL in goals with 33 on the season.

- The Bulldogs game versus the Toronto Marlies on Saturday March 5th marked their second highest attendance at Copps Coliseum this season with 8,693 fans.

- Alex Henry's overtime game-winning goal in Wednesday's game was his first regular season goal since April 3rd, 2009.

ALUMNI WATCH:

There are over 40 former Bulldogs currently on NHL rosters. Over 60 percent of all former 'Dogs have played in at least one NHL game. Here are a few highlights and accomplishments of ex-'Dogs from this past week:

- Los Angeles C Jarret Stoll tallied an assist in a 7-4 loss to the Red Wings (Feb. 28) and recorded the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over the Phoenix Coyotes (Mar. 3)

- Montreal LW Max Pacioretty tallied a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win over the Thrashers (Mar. 1) and added two goals including the game-winner against the Tampa Bay Lightning (Mar. 5)

- Montreal C David Desharnais had an assist in a 3-1 win over Atlanta (Mar. 1), he netted a goal in a 4-0 defeat of the Panthers and added another on against the Lightning winning the game 4-2 (Mar. 5)

- Detroit RW Daniel Cleary added a goal in the Wings 7-4 win against the Kings (Feb. 28)

- Montreal LW Andrei Kostitsyn had a point in each of Montreal's games this week. Against the Thrashers he recorded an assist (Mar. 1), added a goal and an assist in 4-0 win over the Panthers (Mar. 3) and notched another assist in game against the Lightning (Mar. 5)

- Toronto C Mikhail Grabovski earned a goal and an assist in a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins (Mar. 2) and an assist in another 3-2 win against the Flyers (Mar. 3)

- Dallas C Mike Ribeiro recorded two assists this week, he had an assist in a 3-2 win against the Coyotes (Mar. 1) and added another against the Sharks (Mar. 5)
