Suns Win Fifth Southern League Championship

September 18, 2010 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Jacksonville, Fla. - Chris Hatcher broke a scoreless ninth inning tie with a leadoff home run, leading the Jacksonville Suns (81-59 regular season, 6-2 postseason) to a 1-0 win over the Tennessee Smokies (86-53 regular season, 4-4 postseason) in front of 4,133 Saturday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville for the fifth Southern League Championship in Jacksonville Suns franchise history.

Suns reliever Sandy Rosario (2-0) dealt a scoreless ninth inning for the winning decision and received a promotion to the Florida Marlins following the game. Smokies reliever Luke Sommer (1-0) gave up the game-ending home run for the losing decision.

Jacksonville becomes only the second Southern League city to claim a repeat Southern League Championship, joining Montgomery (1972-73, 1975-77, 2006-07). The championship is the 10th in the 93-season history of professional baseball in the city of Jacksonville.

Suns starting pitcher Jose Rosario dealt six shutout frames, scattering three Tennessee hits with one walk and five strikeouts without factoring in the decision. Smokies starting pitcher Craig Muschko allowed one hit over seven shutout frames without a walk and six strikeouts.

Chris Hatcher was 1-for-27 in the 2010 Southern League postseason until leading off the ninth inning with a home run, giving the Suns a 1-0 win and starting a wild on-field celebration at the Baseball Grounds.

The Suns recorded only two scattered singles in the first eight innings of the game without any other baserunners.

The Suns open the 2011 season on April 11 at the Baseball Grounds against the Huntsville Stars. For ticket information call the Suns box office at 358-2846 or by visiting jaxsuns.com.
