Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

Center Matt Whitehead has agreed to return to the Ice Flyers for this upcoming season. Matt who had 12 goals and 24 assists with 2 game winning goals in 36 games last season for the Ice Flyers brings speed back to the Ice Flyers offense while delivering great puck handling ability as well. Whitehead also finished the season strong with a tremendous playoff performance scoring 3 goals with 1 assist in the Ice Flyers 3 playoff games last year.

Defensemen Mark Hinz has also agreed to return to the Ice Flyers lineup for this coming season. Mark had a solid season last year for the Ice Flyers scoring 12 goals and 17 assists in 49 games with 2 game winning goals as well. Hinz was also extremely effect during power plays where he had 8 power play goals and 8 power plays assists during the 2009-2010 season; he also netted 1 goal during the Ice Flyers playoff run.

Coach Gordon has high hopes for Whitehead, "Matt had a tremendous season last year for us and was our forth leading scorer despite playing 20 less games then the guys above him, and he has great vision on the ice and makes the right decisions when he has the puck. He is extremely fast so when he gets the puck it is very hard to defend him and now that he has some experience on our team I expect him to be battling for the leading scorer position which showed during last year's playoffs where he just played fantastic.", Coach Gordon stated.

When asked about Hinz Coach Gordon said, "I am extremely excited to have Mark back in our defensive lineup, with his experience on the blue line and his leadership skills fans will see an immediate impact on the ice. Last season Mark was our leading scorer on defense & third on the team for power play points and I feel he will continue that trend. He adds an element to our team that will help us in all phases on and off the ice. Mark is just a great person to be around and a solid hockey player."

Coach Gordon is also in negotiations with Joey Hughes, Dan Buccella and Matt Whithers about returning to Pensacola for this season and should have some announcements within the next week or so.

In other Ice Flyers' news, the team has unveiled a new VIP Text Club in which members will receive updates, news, coupons and participate in contests all via their mobile phones. To become a member, simply text "iceflyers" to "91904" (standard message rates will apply). All fans that become VIP Text Club Members before the start of the season will be entered to win an authentic, game worn jersey.

The Ice Flyers also announced this week the return of their Pre-Season Golf Classic. The event, which was held last year, gives fans a unique chance to interact with members of the team before the start of the regular season. Coach Todd Gordon said, "it is really a fun and unique event because it gives the players a chance to unwind after camp and before the season opener and really connect with their fans." This year, the event will be held at Glen Lakes Country Club in Foley, Al. For more information, contact the Ice Flyers' front office.
