Grand Slam Dooms Mavs
August 31, 2010 - California League (CalL1) - High Desert Mavericks News Release
Gabe Jacobo drove in five runs, including a game-changing grand slam as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes rolled over the Mavericks 8-1 Tuesday night at the Epicenter.
It looked like both starting pitchers were going be tough to beat, as both Maikel Cleto and Garrett Richards were sharp in the first two innings.
The Mavs broke through in the third, as Kyle Seager knocked an RBI single to open the scoring.
However, the Mavs collected only two hits for the remainder of the game, and would have a runner reach as far as second base just once over the final six innings.
In the bottom of the inning, two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out. After Dillon Baird flied out to shallow center field, Jacobo hammered a first-pitch fastball deep out of the park for a grand slam.
In the fifth, the Quakes had none out with two out before they notched three straight hits. Jacobo provided the final one to score another run and make it 5-1.
Things really fell apart in the sixth. Cleto walked walked the first two men of the inning. Darwin Perez laid down a sac bunt, and Ralph Henriquez threw the ball away to allowing another run to score.
With the bases loaded and one out, Ryan Moorer threw a wild pitch to put the Quakes up 7-1. Baird then lifted a sac fly to center to finish the scoring.
Between the third and sixth innings, the Quakes totaled seven runs, but on just two hits.
Richards (4-1) didn't need nearly the amount of runs he received, throwing seven tremendous innings. He allowed one run and just four hits, with eight strikeouts and one walk to earn his third straight win.
It was an all too familiar night for Cleto (4-9), who took his fifth loss in the last six starts. Although he had a couple of really good innings, he really struggled in some others. Altogether he allowed eight runs and six hits over five-plus innings. He walked and struck out five each.
With the loss, the Mavs fall a game back of first place behind the Quakes. They'll look to pull even when they play Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
