Jaxx Comeback Falls Short Tuesday Night

JACKSON, TENN. (August 24, 2010) - The Diamond Jaxx (27-31) left the tying run in the on-deck circle Tuesday night and fell to the Tennessee Smokies (37-21) at Pringles Park, 9-6. The Jaxx trailed 9-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning and scored six unanswered runs to finish the night on a positive note. Thanks to another Huntsville loss, the Diamond Jaxx remain 4 1/2 games up in the Southern League North, wildcard standings. Tennessee's magic number to win the second half North Division crown is now at five.

Former Tennessee Vol pitcher, Ty'Relle Harris (1-0) made his Double-A starting debut on Tuesday night for the Smokies and got the win. Harris struck out five through five scoreless innings for Tennessee. Steve Bray (7-10) gave up seven runs in just three innings and suffered his third straight loss on the mound. Marco Carrillo got his second save of the season for the Smokies.

Every Smokies hitter had a hit on Tuesday night and they were led by Steve Clevenger, Marwin Gonzalez and Brandon Guyer, who each had two hits. The Smokies had three triples, a homer and two doubles out of their 13-hit attack. Alex Liddi had two doubles and finished 2-for-4 for the Diamond Jaxx. Guillermo Quiroz and Nate Tenbrink posted two-hit performances as well.

The Tennessee Smokies got on the board in the first inning after a triple by Brett Jackson and RBI groundout from Brandon Guyer. The Jaxx trailed 1-0 after the first inning on Tuesday.

The Smokies added to their lead in the top of the second inning and went on top 4-0. Marwin Gonzalez tripled in the Smokies second run and Tony Thomas hit a 2-run homer to cap off the inning.

Russ Canzler, Matt Spencer and Marwin Gonzalez had RBI's in the top of the third inning as Tennessee went ahead 7-0. The three-run inning was the final inning for Jaxx starter, Steven Bray.

After the Smokies added two in the top of the seventh the Jaxx finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. The Jaxx got hits from Leury Bonilla, Nate Tenbrink and Carlos Peguero in the inning that scored runs. The Jaxx trailed 9-3 after seven innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Jaxx got a 3-RBI triple from Matt Lawson against Blake Parker that cut the deficit to just 9-6. Marco Carrillo struck out Joe Dunigan with the tying run left on deck.

The rubber game of the set will be on Wednesday at 12:05 and the Jaxx and Smokies once again meet at Pringles Park. LHP Anthony Vasquez (1-3, 2.52) makes the start for the Jaxx, while RHP Craig Muschko (8-3, 3.84) starts for Tennessee.
