State College Spikes News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA - Zac Fuesser and Mitch Fienemann combined to hold the Williamsport Crosscutters hitless until the eighth inning, but an unearned run proved to be the difference as the State College Spikes dropped a 1-0 decision on Thursday night at Historic Bowman Field.
State College (20-20) and Williamsport (24-16) held each other without a hit for six innings before Pat Irvine broke through with a single up the middle in the seventh inning. Although Cole White followed that with an infield single, the Spikes were unable to muster a run. In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff walk by Jeff Lanning was followed by a sacrifice bunt and two infield errors, allowing Lanning to score the game's only run.
Edgar Duran would lead off the eighth inning for the Crosscutters with a single to put Williamsport in the hit column. Duran was then picked off prior to Miguel Alvarez's triple.
Mitch Fienemann (3-2) took a hard-luck loss, allowing the unearned run on one walk in three innings. Fienemann has not allowed an earned run in his last 12 innings of work. Spikes starter Zac Fuesser walked a season-high four, but also struck out four in four innings on the mound.
Bradley Blanks (1-0) received the win after two innings in which he allowed two hits and struck out two. Chase Johnson (10) picked up the save with two perfect innings to finish off the win, striking out four in the process. Crosscutters starter Mario Hollands yielded just a walk and struck out five in his five innings of work.
The loss was the first by the score of 1-0 in the Spikes' five-year history, after seven wins by that margin.
Friday, State College and Williamsport head back to University Park to finish off their three-game set at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander and New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week Tyler Waldron (2-2) going for the Spikes against Crosscutters right-hander Craig Fritsch (2-0). Waldron brings a streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings into the game, while Fritsch has racked up a 0.77 ERA in his first 23 1/3 innings on the hill for Williamsport.
It's also a 4 for $44 Friday at the park, presented by US Foodservice. Fans can purchase four Diamond Club tickets, four hot dogs and four small sodas for just $44, with additional packages available at just $11 each. Plus, the Spikes will celebrate the history and heritage of Lewistown, Burnham and other local communities on Mifflin and Juniata County Night, presented by the Lewistown /Sentinel/. The night will feature pre-game performances and in-game tributes, with Post-Game Kids Run the Bases, presented by HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital, and a spectacular FIREWORKS show capping off the activities at the ballpark.
