Spikes Come Back in Ninth, But Fall to Scrappers in Eleven, 6-4

State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE - The State College Spikes withstood a 28-minute rain delay and a two-run deficit in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored two runs in the eleventh inning to take a 6-4 victory at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Wednesday night.

State College (16-17) trailed, 4-2, heading into the bottom of the ninth inning against Mahoning Valley (14-19) closer Nick Kirk. However, as rain fell, Adalberto Santos led off the inning and reached on a fielding error by shortstop Kevin Fontanez. Following a walk to Matt Curry, Kirk then unleashed a wild pitch to the screen to allow the runners to move to second and third, at which point the game was stopped until the rain passed.

Another Kirk wild pitch then scored Santos when play resumed, and a walk to Chase Lyles was followed by an RBI sacrifice bunt by Walker Gourley to tie the game, 4-4. The Scrappers, however, responded with a pair of runs on a Dan DeGeorge suicide squeeze bunt and a Brian Heere RBI single in the top of the eleventh to put away the victory.

Curry's ninth-inning walk allowed him to extend his on-base streak to 18 games, the second longest active streak in the New York-Penn League behind the 23-game string of Tri-City's Wilton Infante. Mel Rojas, Jr. and Gift Ngoepe each contributed RBI doubles, with Rojas the only Spike to have multiple hits in the game. The Spikes managed to force extra innings even after being outhit, 13-5.

Jhonathan Ramos (0-1) took the loss for the Spikes after allowing both Scrappers runs in the eleventh on a total of two hits while striking out two. Quinton Miller made another outstanding start for State College, yielding just one run on four hits and striking out three.

Mahoning Valley reliever J.D. Goryl (1-2) took the victory with two scoreless innings in the tenth and eleventh, allowing just one hit and striking out one.

Thursday, the Spikes return to action to start a three-game series against the Auburn Doubledays, affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, with a 7:05 matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send left-hander Colton Cain (0-0) to the mound for his first start as a Spike. Cain has made a pair of scoreless single-inning appearances in the New York-Penn League thus far. Auburn will retort with left-hander Sam Strickland (1-2), who allowed six runs in 3 2/3 innings against the Spikes on Saturday.

Spikes fans have the opportunity to win a fantastic trip for four to one of America's best vacation destinations, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, this Thursday night as well. Fans in attendance can sign up at the VisitMyrtleBeach.com display on the main concourse throughout the evening. Then, in the seventh inning, one lucky fan will be announced as the winner.
