Giants Blast Mavericks To Snap Losing Streak

July 15, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

Charlie Culberson and Michael Sandoval each homered and the San Jose Giants never trailed after a five-run fifth inning en route to a 10-4 victory over the High Desert Mavericks on Wednesday evening at Stater Bros. Stadium. The Giants knocked out eight hits and took advantage of four Mavericks errors to snap a season-high tying four-game losing streak. The win improves San Jose's overall record to 51-39.

Culberson (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) homered for the third straight game while Sandoval (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI), Juan Perez (2-for-4, RBI) and Francisco Peguero (2-for-4, 3B, RBI) added two hits apiece to lead the Giants offensive attack.

With the game tied 2-2, Sandoval began the pivotal fifth-inning rally with a one-out double into the left field corner. Jose Flores followed with a ground ball to first base that was mishandled by Eddy Martinez-Esteve for an error as Sandoval scored to give San Jose the lead. After James Simmons struck out, Perez grounded a single into right field advancing Flores to third. On the play, High Desert right fielder Johermyn Chavez threw the ball wildly to third for another error allowing Flores to score while Perez moved to third. Ehire Adrianza then delivered an RBI single up the middle before Culberson stepped to the plate and belted a two-run homer to left. The home run, Culberson's team-leading 13th of the season, gave the Giants a 7-2 lead.

San Jose added to their lead in the top of the seventh as Simmons drew a walk to begin the frame, advanced to third on a wild pick-off throw and scored on Perez's bloop single to left.

In the eighth, Peguero led off with a single before Sandoval hammered a two-out home run to straightaway center field extending the lead to 10-2.

Craig Whitaker (1-0) was credited with the victory out of the Giants bullpen after holding the Mavericks scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings. Whitaker surrendered one hit and struck out one.

Brian Anderson (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO) relieved Whitaker to begin the bottom of the seventh and struck out four during his stint on the mound. Anderson yielded an unearned run in the eighth before Kyle Woodruff (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) pitched the ninth.

High Desert initially took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as consecutive singles from Shaver Hansen and Kyle Seager against San Jose starter Justin Fitzgerald began the frame. After Edilio Colina's sacrifice bunt, Chavez came through with an RBI single. Fitzgerald though limited the damage as Chavez was thrown out at second attempting to steal before Martinez-Esteve struck out.

Mavericks starter Jon Hesketh retired the first 11 batters that he faced until issuing a two-out walk to Culberson in the top of the fourth. Peguero followed with an RBI triple into the right field corner before scoring on the same play when the relay throw to third base skipped away for an error.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kuo Hui Lo led off with a double and scored three batters later on Trevor Coleman's one-out single. However with runners on first and third, Fitzgerald struck out the next two hitters, Hansen and Seager, to keep the score tied.

Fitzgerald worked the first four innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits. The right-hander walked two, struck out six and threw 90 pitches.

Notes: The road team has won all eight games (4-4) in Giants-Mavericks season series this year ... The bullpen trio of Whitaker, Anderson and Woodruff combined to allow just one earned run over the last five innings ... San Jose avoided their first five-game losing streak since dropping six in a row from July 12-18, 2008 ... The Giants were 2-for-3 with runners in scoring position ... They left only one runner on base for the entire game ... San Jose pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts and just two walks ... Peguero's triple was his 10th of the season - tied for the league lead ... The Giants single-season team record for triples is 12 (Clay Timpner, 2005).

On Deck: The Giants and Mavericks continue their three-game series on Thursday evening with first pitch at Stater Bros. Stadium scheduled for 7:05 PM. Oliver Odle (9-3, 4.25 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while High Desert is expected to counter with Jake Wild (6-3, 5.65 ERA). The game can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com.
