Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels gave Manager Bill Mosiello the best gift he could ask for on his birthday: a 4-2 win over the Fort Wayne Tincaps on Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field. Casey Haerther and Carlos Ramirez both went 2-3 with an RBI and Jon Karcich delivered an RBI triple to spark the Kernel offense.

Trailing 2-1, the Kernels tied the game in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Terrell Alliman off the Home Run Hot Tub in left field, his first home run as a Kernel. The Kernels broke the game open in the sixth as Haerther singled and scored scored on Karcich's triple, followed by Ramirez's single to score Karcich.

Kernels starter Fabio Martinez gave up two runs in the first but settled down to not allow any more runs as he gave up five hits, walked three and struck out six over five innings in a no-decision effort. Reliver Young-Il Jung (1-1) picked up the win with one inning of work and David Carpenter struck out two in the ninth for his fourth save. Fort Wayne reliever Matt Jackson (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits over 3.2 IP. Edinson Rincon went 2-4 with an RBI for Fort Wayne and Danny Payne went 1-4 with a double and run scored. The Tincaps struck out 14 times and stranded nine runners in the game.

Game two between the Kernels and Tincaps is set for Thursday night at 6:35 pm as Ariel Pena starts for the Kernels against Jerry Sullivan for Fort Wayne. Gates open at 5:30 pm and tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am on Thursday.

It's a 100.7 The Fox Thirsty Thursday where 12 oz. draft beer is just $1.50 all game and bottled soda and water is two dollars. The Kernels welcome special guests from Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids to their annual night at the stadium. The current home stand continues through Monday, July 19th.
