Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The TinCaps sprinted out to an early lead, but did not score after the first inning in a 4-2 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels, Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Edinson Rincon had Fort Wayne's only multi-hit game and RBI.
Cedar Rapids scored all four of its runs with two outs, going 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position. The TinCaps went just 2-for-12 in the same situation.
It was the first game for the Kernels without top prospect and Midwest League All-Star OF Mike Trout.
Kernels RHP Fabio Martinez walked Danny Payne to start the ballgame and uncorked a wild pitch to move him to second. After a single by Jeudy Valdez put runners at the corners, Martinez fired an errant pickoff throw to first, allowing Payne to score. Martinez struck out back-to-back batters only to give up a two-out RBI single to Rincon to make it 2-0.
Cedar Rapids got a run back in the bottom of the first on Casey Haerther's two-out RBI single. In the second, Terrell Alliman's solo home run pulled the Kernels even.
In the sixth, Jon Karcich ripped a two-out RBI triple to left-center, plating Haerther with the go- ahead run. Carlos Ramirez followed with a run-scoring single to double the Cedar Rapids lead to 4-2.
The TinCaps threatened in the top of the seventh; Payne stroked a leadoff double and Jason Hagerty walked, but a pair of strikeouts helped squelch the rally.
Kernels relievers combined to throw four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. They retired the final eight TinCaps hitters in order.
Cedar Rapids RHP Young-Il Jung (1-1) notched the win thanks to a scoreless inning; Fort Wayne RHP Matt Jackson (0-1) was the losing pitcher. Kernels RHP David Carpenter picked up his fourth save.
Fort Wayne dipped to 9-10 in the half, 45-44 for the season. Cedar Rapids won its fourth straight game to improve to 11-7 in the second half, 54-32 for the year.
The TinCaps continue the three-game series against the Kernels (Class-A Los Angeles Angels) Thursday at 7:35 p.m. ET. Fort Wayne RHP Jerry Sullivan (7-3) locks horns with Cedar Rapids RHP Ariel Pena (3-2).
