Lexington Legends News Release

The West Virginia Power trailed 8-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but rallied to beat the Lexington Legends 10-9 in 10 innings Thursday night in Charleston.

The Legends' J.D. Martinez was 5-for-5 in the game with two home runs, a double and six RBI. He drove in a run with a first-inning double, hit a two-run homer in the second, and added a two-run single in the fifth. After West Virginia had rallied to cut the lead to 8-5, Martinez led off the seventh inning with a home run to give the Legends a four-run margin.

It was Martinez' second five-hit game of the year. He went 5-for-6 at Greenville April 27. Martinez leads the South Atlantic League in several offensive categories including batting average at .355.

West Virginia pulled to within a run with three runs in the eighth inning. They scored the tying run in the ninth on back-to-back doubles by Ramon Cabrera, who had three hits in the game, and Kyle Morgan. In the 10th, David Rubenstein was hit by a pitch leading off. Aaron Baker's bunt was fielded by pitcher Mike Schurz, who attempted to get a force play at second base but threw the ball into center field. Rubenstein advanced to third on Schurz' error and Baker moved to second when center fielder Grant Hogue overran the ball. Jose Hernandez was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Jesus Brito's sacrifice fly brought Rubenstein home with the winning run.

Zach Foster (4-2), who pitched the 10th inning for West Virginia, got the win. Schurz (0-2) took the loss. The series continues in Charleston with a 7:05 p.m. game Friday.
