Saltdogs Sign One Rookie, Trade Another
June 25, 2010 - American Association (AA) Lincoln Saltdogs
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs added a true rookie to the roster Friday, signing catcher Pat Trettel. Lincoln also traded pitcher Greg Lane to Normal of the Frontier League for a player to be named later, and placed infielder Brandon Jones on the disabled list.Trettel joins the Saltdogs after an outstanding career at Seton Hill University, a Division II school in Pennsylvania. This past spring, the talented backstop became the first male athlete at Seton Hill ever to earn first-team All-American honors. For the 2010 season, he hit .420 with a school-record 16 home runs and 81 RBI. Trettel also showed surprising speed for a catcher, stealing 11 bases in 13 attempts, and led his team to its first conference championship. He finished his college career with 37 home runs, also a school record.
Lane, a right-handed reliever, appeared in 13 games for the Saltdogs, going 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA. Lincoln had acquired him from Sussex of the Can-Am League in the offseason.
Jones, who injured an ankle while sliding in a game at El Paso last Sunday, was placed on the disabled list retroactive to Monday, June 21. On the season, Brandon is batting .248 with five home runs and 19 RBI.
The signing of Trettel also means that Lincoln will move Tycen PoVey from his role as the team's backup catcher to a spot as a relief pitcher. PoVey has pitched in three games this season, posting a 3.00 ERA and striking out five batters in three innings of work.
