Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

KINSTON, NC - Riding a three-game win streak as they set out for Kinston, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans were feeling pretty good about their ballclub over the last couple of weeks. But the Kinston Indians had the answer for everything the Pelicans threw at them in the opener of their four-game series at Grainger Stadium as the K-Tribe snapped the Birds' three-game streak in a methodical 4-2 victory.

Phenom Julio Teheran, fresh off his All-Star Game nomination on Thursday took to the hill to face the K-Tribe and fellow All-Star T.J. McFarland, the league leader in ERA, and it was McFarland who blinked first. After newcomer Mycal Jones singled in his first Carolina League at bat, Travis Jones followed with his second home run of the season, a booming shot that gave the Pelicans an early 2-0 lead. With the way Teheran had pitched recently, two runs were plenty for the Columbian right-hander.

But not on this night as Teheran battled all evening without his best stuff as the K-Tribe singled the 19-year old to death with the only extra-base hit being a double in the fifth to Karexon Sanchez. All in all Teheran (2-1) allowed nine hits in six innings but kept his team in the ballgame while allowing just three runs and striking out five.

Dealing with traffic much of the night, the K-Tribe loaded the bases with one out in the first but didn't score. The Tribe pushed a run across in the third on a double play ground ball and plated two more in the fifth as five straight men reached on Teheran on four singles and a hit batter. With the 3-2 lead in their pocket, that one run was more than enough for the top pitching staff in the Carolina League on this night.

McFarland settled down after that first inning home run, allowing just three baserunners in his final five innings of work to pick up his seventh win of the season. David Roberts, Chris Jones, and Cory Burns combined to shut out the Pelicans for the final three innings, but things got harrowing for the Tribe in the ninth.

A leadoff walk by Dan Nelson and a one-out single by Jesus Sucre put the tying runs on the basepaths, and a productive groundout by Calvin Culver put them both in scoring position, but Burns induced a weak groundball from newcomer Osman Marval to end the game and give the K-Tribe a victory in game one of the four-game set.

These two teams will square off tomorrow with first pitch coming at 7 ET. You can catch all the action at myrtlebeachpelicans.com or ESPN Radio, the Team as Pelicans lefty Matt Crim will go toe to toe with K-Tribe righty Joey Mahalic.
