June 10, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 10, 2010) - The Winston-Salem Dash placed a team-record seven players on the Carolina League All-Star Team when rosters were announced earlier today. The following Dash players will represent the Carolina League when it faces the California League All-Stars on Tuesday, June 22 in Myrtle Beach: SS Eduardo Escobar, RHP Gregory Infante, 3B Jon Gilmore, OF Justin Greene, RHP Nevin Griffith, 1B Seth Loman, and OF Brandon Short.

The seven Winston-Salem All-Stars are the most in the team's 66-year history. It also ties the league record for most All-Stars on one team, shared by the 2008 Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the 2002 Lynchburg Hillcats, and the 1995 Kinston Indians.

SS Eduardo Escobar entered the season rated by Baseball America as the "Best Defensive Infielder" and the 19th-best prospect in the Chicago White Sox Organization. He has lived up to his defensive reputation, posting the best fielding percentage of any shortstop in the Carolina League (.969). He has also had a career offensive campaign through his first 59 games. Escobar is hitting .277 with two home runs, 30 RBI, 12 doubles, three triples and 40 runs scored. He ranks fifth in the Carolina League with 70 hits and has been a constant in the second spot in the Dash lineup. This is the first time Escobar has been named to an All-Star team.

RHP Gregory Infante has been as dominant a closer as any other in the Carolina League this season. The flame-throwing Venezuelan is tied for the league lead with eight saves in ten chances while posting a 1-1 record and a 3.14 ERA. He leads the league in appearances (26) and games finished (22). Infante has struck out 29 batters in 28.2 innings pitched and he is holding the Carolina League to a .229 opponents' batting average. The selection is the first for Infante, who is the only relief pitcher on the All-Star Team.

3B Jon Gilmore has been one of the steadiest hitters in the Carolina League all season. A fixture in the league's batting average leaders, Gilmore ranks fourth in the CL with a .327 clip to go along with three home runs and 34 RBI. He ranks second in the league with 85 hits and is currently on a ten-game hitting streak, his third double-digit hitting streak this season. Gilmore has played in 59 of the team's 60 games and has picked up at least one hit in all but eight of those contests. This is the second time Gilmore has been named an All-Star. He was named to the 2009 South Atlantic League All-Star Team when playing for the Kannapolis Intimidators.

OF Justin Greene's offensive statistics made him the best number nine hitter in the Carolina League this season, with numbers that would seemingly merit a spot in the middle of the order. Greene is hitting .313 with seven home runs and 37 RBI. His name litters the Carolina League leaders, ranking eighth in batting average, fourth in stolen bases (15), fifth in on-base percentage (.399), second in slugging percentage (.552), first in triples (8), and fifth in total bases (111). He leads the Dash in walks (26) and OPS (.951) and has made several spectacular defensive plays in center field throughout the season. He is also the only player in the league that has played in every game this season. A native of Goose Creek, SC, Greene will be playing about two hours from home when he heads to Myrtle Beach. This is the first All-Star selection for Greene, who has twice been named the Carolina League's "Player of the Week" this season.

RHP Nevin Griffith is the only Dash starting pitcher to make the All-Star Team. The 21-year-old Floridian is 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA this season. He ranks fifth in the Carolina League in ERA and has been excellent in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery. He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in nine of his first 11 starts and has been credited with six quality starts this season. This is Griffith's first All-Star nod.

1B Seth Loman has terrified Carolina League pitchers all season. The slugger leads the league with 14 home runs and is tied for second with 44 RBI. Loman owns a .285 batting average and ranks among the league leaders in on-base percentage (4th .403), slugging percentage (3rd, .544), extra-base hits (3rd, 29), runs scored (2nd, 44), and total bases (2nd, 124). Loman has also been hit by 20 pitches this season and is four away from tying the league record for most times hit by a pitch in any single season. This is Loman's first All-Star honor. He made the team as the Carolina League's designated hitter.

OF Brandon Short is an early candidate for league MVP with the terrific season he has had as the Dash's leadoff batter. Short is second in the Carolina League in batting average with a .338 clip. He has swatted seven home runs and is fourth in the league with 41 RBI. He has led the CL in hits (90) for nearly the entire season and ranks third in doubles (19), fourth in extra-base hits (28), and first in total bases (134). Short had a 26-game hit streak that lasted from April 11 - May 8 and has had a base hit in 49 of the 59 games he has played this season. He and fellow All-Star Justin Greene are tied for third in the Carolina League with eight outfield assists. This is the first All-Star selection for Short.
