May 13, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Sky Sox dropped a tough one Thursday afternoon at Security Service Field, falling to the Albuquerque Isotopes, 7-2.
Picking up right where they left off yesterday, the CoSox unleashed an offensive barrage in the first. Sparked by Chris Frey's leadoff single, the club strung together three consecutive hits to push two runs across home plate. Sox right fielder Matt Miller extended his hitting streak to 21 games in the inning, but was thrown out on the basepaths while attempting to advance on the throw to the plate. Their bats would quiet after the first.
Albuquerque starter Tim Corcoran got the ball rolling for the Isotopes in the top of the third, launching a wall-ball double to left leading off the frame. Sox' starter Brandon Durden sending down the next two batters with ease, Jamie Hoffman and Jay Gibbons smashed back-to-back doubles, tying the game at two. The next batter, Michael Restovich, popped out to shallow left to end the inning.
Applying more pressure in the fifth, Gibbons doubled off the wall in left with one out, driving in Ivan De Jesus, Jr. from first. The relay at home narrowly missing De Jesus, the 'Topes went up 3-2. Russell Mitchell doubled with two outs to drive in Gibbons, extending the lead to two.
Tacking on two more in the seventh, Albuquerque catcher J.D. Closser hit the game's first home run in the eighth, putting the 'Topes up by five before the game went final, 7-2.
With the loss, the Sky Sox fall to 18-16 on the year, first place in the Pacific North. Albuquerque improves to 18-15. Brandon Durden (0-1, 7.20) takes the loss while Tim Corcoran (3-2, 4.55) records the win.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow for the series finale and final meeting of the two clubs this season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
