Arkansas Travelers News Release

North Little Rock - The Arkansas Travelers ended their winning streak with a loss to the Springfield Cardinals 3-2 on Sunday at Dickey-Stephens Park. Travs left hander Mike Anton (2-2) was defeated by Cards righty David Kopp (2-0) after struggling early and giving up two runs in the first inning.

The Travs saw their brief two-game winning streak stopped and their record falls to 12-16. Springfield is back at .500 at 15-15.

Anton pitched well but struggled in the first inning allowing two runs. He bounced back nicely and finished seven innings allowing three runs on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Kopp earned the win by retiring 10 of the last 11 Travs batters he faced during his longest outing of the year. He gave up just one run on three base hits and two walks while striking out three in seven innings.

The first inning started off with a pair of Cardinal doubles by Adron Chambers and Pete Kozma making the score 1-0. Steven Hill singled to right center to bring around Kozma and increase the lead to an early 2-0. Anton got a pair of groundballs to get two outs, then got more help from centerfielder Clay Fuller when he picked up a single by Daryl Jones and threw out Curt Smith out at the plate as he attempted to score.

The Travs helped Anton again in the top of the second and third by turning two double plays after Anton gave up to walks in the prior at bats.

In the bottom of the third inning the Travs finally got on the board when Fuller led off with a double. He was then moved to third after a sacrifice bunt by Jeremy Moore. Andrew Romine then hit a groundball up the middle which was recorded for the second out, but it was enough to get the Travs first run across the plate.

In the top of the sixth inning the Cardinals added their last run with a leadoff homerun by Hill (4) pushing their lead to 3-1.

The Travs put up their second run in the bottom of the eighth against Cards reliever Casey Mulligan starting with a single to right by Alberto Rosario. Rosario later moved to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Jeremy Moore making the score 3-2. Eduardo Sanchez was summoned from the pen and left the tying run at second base when Romine flied out.

Travs second baseman Abel Nieves lined a single towards the right-field corner leading off the ninth. Sanchez then struck out the next three batters to earn his sixth save of the season.

Tomorrow's pitching match up will be between RHP Tim Kiely (2-3, 5.72) of the Travs and RHP Shaun Garceau (0-5, 3.94) of the Cardinals. Game Time is 7:10 and the gates will open at 6:00. The game broadcast is available on Sports Animal 920 AM beginning at 6:50 p.m.
