Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - On Friday, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced their April organizational player and pitcher of the month, rewarding BayBears outfielder Evan Frey and BayBears starting pitcher Wes Roemer with the honors.
Frey, in his second season with the BayBears, reached base at a solid .396 clip in the season's first month while pacing the BayBears with a .337 average. Among the team leaders in stolen bases, Frey swiped five bags in April while cracking four doubles and smashing three triples.
Always a strong defensive player, Frey has spent the majority of his time in center field while also receiving an opportunity to play right field. He never made an error in the first month of the year and recorded two outfield assists. He also finished April with a nine-game hitting streak on his way to an 11-gamer which ceased on May 3.
Roemer was by far the ace of an extremely talented BayBears' starting rotation in the opening month. Roemer made five starts and worked his to a 2-1 record with a stingy 2.00 ERA. He tossed 36 innings in April and only walked three hitters while striking out 25. Opponents hit just .246 against him.
Among Roemer's many April highlights was taking the mound at Hank Aaron Stadium on April 14 following the opening ceremonies of the Hank Aaron Childhood Home & Museum. Despite the presence of seven Hall of Famers in attendance, Roemer glided through seven frames in a 7-2 BayBears' victory over Birmingham. Roemer also closed the month with a flurry, hurling a five-hit shutout against Carolina on April 29. It was the Southern League's first complete game shutout of the season.
The BayBears close out a five-game series on Saturday night against the Tennessee Smokies at 5:15. They will return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Saturday, May 15 to battle the Chattanooga Lookouts at 7:05.
