Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (15-10) continue their winning ways with an 11-5 victory over the Rome Braves (9-17) on Tuesday afternoon. They have won seven out of their last eight games.

The Suns scored first in the top of the third. After Francisco Soriano led off with a double off Rome starter Chris Masters, Sean Nicol got a sacrifice bunt to take Soriano to third, followed by a Steven Souza sacrifice fly to center to score him for a 1-0 lead.

Rome responded in the bottom of the fourth off Suns starter Paul Demny. The Braves got the bases loaded with no outs. Cory Harrilchak hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Mycal Jones from third to tie the game. Demny got out of the inning by striking out the next two batters to keep the score tied.

The score remained tied 1-1 thru the seventh inning. Demny left during the sixth, pitching 5.2 strong innings, allowing one run and striking out five for Hagerstown. Masters did not come out after the seventh, throwing seven solid innings with one run and four strikeouts for the Braves. Both ended with no decisions.

The Suns powered the attack in the top of the eighth off Corey Rasmus (1-1). With Soriano on third, Nicol hit a sacrifice fly to left. Braves left fielder Robert Hefflinger misplayed the catch, scoring Soriano and putting Nicol on second for the 2-1 Suns lead. The next batter, Souza tripled to center to score Nicol, followed by Justin Bloxom doubling to left to score Souza. With Destin Hood up next, Bloxom stole third base then scored on Rome catcher Braeden Schlehuber's throwing error. Hagerstown ended the top of the eighth with a 5-1 lead.

Rome tried to rally in the bottom half of the inning off Suns reliever Mitchell Clegg (3-0). With first and second and one away, Jordan Schafer singled to center to score Chris Lovett and put runners on the corners. Hefflinger hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Jones. The Suns lead was cut to two, up 5-3.

Hagerstown exploded in the next half inning to secure the game. With the bases loaded and one out against Thomas Berryhill, Nicol hit a fly ball double to center, sending Adrian Nieto, Eury Perez and Soriano home for three RBIs. After Souza walked, Bloxom lined a triple to right to score Nicol and Souza. Next batter, Destin Hood singled to right to bring Bloxom home. Hagerstown got an 11-3 lead after eight-and-a-half.

The Braves got two runs in the bottom of the ninth off Patrick Arnold with a Derick Wiley RBI-double to score Christian Bethancourt from first and later a Lovett single to bring in Wiley, but the Suns held on for an 11-5 win for a third straight victory.

Clegg picked up the win after coming in relief for Demny in the sixth, pitching two-and-a-third innings, allowing two runs. Arnold allowed two unearned runs in one inning pitched.

Rasmus got the loss after allowing four runs, with two earned, while only recording one out. Berryhill surrendered six runs, one unearned, in one inning of work.

The Suns and Braves will play game three of the four-game set on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at State Mutual Stadium in Rome.
