Former White Sox Hurler Named Bench Coach

May 1, 2010 - Northern League (NL) Joliet JackHammers

JOLIET, IL - The JackHammers announced today that former White Sox pitcher, Marvin Freeman, will serve as the Bench Coach in 2010. Freeman completes a coaching staff that now includes three guys with former Major League experience.

Freeman suited up with four big league teams (Philadelphia, Atlanta, Colorado and the Chicago White Sox) in ten seasons. The Chicago, Illinois native went 35-28 with a 4.64 earned-run average in 221 career games (78 starts). Freeman conquered the hitting friendly, Coors Field, in 1994, enjoying his best season. "Starvin" Marvin compiled a 10-2 record with a 2.80 ERA in 19 games (18 starts), earned the Colorado Rockies Pitcher of the Year award. Freeman had the best winning percentage in the National League that season, the third best ERA and finished fourth in the Cy Young voting.

"Marvin will be a great presence for our clubhouse," explained JackHammers Manager Chad Parker. "He was part of some great teams and will translate what that takes to our players."

The Jackson State product was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2nd round (49th overall) of the 1984 draft. Freeman was named the Phillies minor league pitcher of the year in 1986 and made his professional debut on September 16th that season. The Chicago Vocational High School alum was a member of the 1991 and 1992 National League champion Atlanta Braves teams, pitching in three games of the '92 National League Championship Series against Pittsburgh.

"It's a pleasure being a part of the Jackhammers organization," commented Freeman. "I look forward to sharing the knowledge I've acquired throughout my big league and coaching career."

Freeman has extensive coaching experience since his playing days, including 12 years as a pitching instructor with the Diamond Sports Academy. Marvin has also served as a roving instructor for the Chicago White Sox and pitching coach for the Cook County Cheetahs (now Windy City ThunderBolts) in the Frontier League. Freeman is currently the pitching coach for Homewood-Flossmoor High School and resides in the Chicago area.
