Montgomery Named CL Pitcher Of The Week Again

April 26, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - The Carolina League announced on Monday that Wilmington Blue Rocks southpaw starter Michael Montgomery has been named the CL Pitcher of the Week for the period ranging from April 19-25. It marks the second time in as many weeks Montgomery has taken home the honor.

The lefty made a pair of starts over that stretch and was nearly untouchable. He posted a 1-0 record with a scant 1.42 earned run average. He struck out 14 and walked just three in 12.2 IP.

Montgomery was the Rocks' Opening Day starter on April 8, allowing only a single unearned tally in five solid frames against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. He took a no-decision that night, but raised his game to another level in his second start of the season.

The Mission Hills, CA native whiffed a career-best 13 men in a 3-1 defeat of the Kinston Indians at historic Grainger Stadium on April 13. Montgomery did not allow a baserunner until the K-Tribe began the seventh with an infield single. His outing ended after that frame having surrendered just one run on two hits, and without issuing a free pass.

Eleven of Montgomery's 13 strikeouts came on swings, and the total was the most by a Blue Rock since current big leaguer Aníbal Sánchez whiffed 14 versus Salem on April 16, 2005.

On April 19 Montgomery faced the K-Tribe again, and while he may not have registered as many strikeouts (eight), he did toss six frames without surrendering an earned run in a no-decision.

Five days later, Montgomery kept one of the hottest teams in the CL at bay for 6.2 innings. The Winston-Salem Dash managed just two runs on eight hits while whiffing eight times as Wilmington's ace earned his second victory of the season.

This marks the third time Montgomery has been honored as the league's Pitcher of the Week. On top of being recognized in each of the 2010 campaign's first two weeks, Montgomery was the CL Pitcher of the Week during the final week of the 2009 season. In total, Montgomery has won the award three consecutive times.

The Blue Rocks continue their six-game road trip with the first of three against the Red Sox in Salem, VA tonight at 7:05 p.m. Wilmington returns home to open a seven-game homestand on Friday, April 30 at 7:05 p.m. For tickets call 302-888-BLUE or visit the team's website, www.bluerocks.com.
