Dragons Fall to South Bend, 6-3

Dayton, Ohio- The South Bend Silver Hawks scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to overcome a 3-2 deficit and defeat the Dayton Dragons 6-3 on Saturday night before a crowd of 9,220 at Fifth Third Field. The win was the Silver Hawks' first of the season after nine consecutive losses. The Dragons fell to 6-4 with the loss.

Dayton's Byron Wiley gave the Dragons a 2-1 lead in the third inning with a lead-off home run to right field. The Dragons added another run in the fifth when Wiley singled, stole second, and scored on Kevin Coddington's two-out single to center to make it 3-1.

South Bend scored a single run in the sixth before taking the lead for good against Dragons reliever Justin Walker (0-2) in the seventh. Chris Owings delivered a two-run triple just beyond the reach of center fielder Andrew Means to give South Bend a 4-3 lead. Bobby Borchering added an RBI double and Matt Davidson delivered a run-scoring double to close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Jacob Johnson battled through five innings, allowing nine hits and two earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts. Walker worked two innings, giving up four hits and four runs (two earned) with no walks and no strikeouts to absorb the loss.

Dayton finished with eight hits. Henry Rodriguez had two hits including a double to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight games. Shane Carlson also had two hits for Dayton. The Dragons were just 1 for 11 with men in scoring position and stranded nine.

The series continues with game two on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Josh Ravin (0-0, 2.08) will make his third start of the season for Dayton. Mike Belfiore (0-1, 4.70) will start for South Bend. The series with South Bend concludes Monday at 7:00 p.m. before West Michigan comes to town for three games.
