Gladiators Blanked by Stingrays

February 19, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The Gladiators suffered their first shutout since January 2nd of 2009 in a 4-0 loss to the Stingrays on Friday. Gwinnett mustered just 15 shots on goal in the loss, as Shane Connelly earned the shutout. It was the first time this season that the Gladiators have been shutout.

The Stingrays jumped out to the early lead less than five minutes into the opening stanza. After a turnover in the neutral zone, Spencer Carbery led a 3-on-1 rush into the Gwinnett Zone. Carbery fed a pass to a streaking Rob Ricci, and he tucked a shot into the upper left corner of the net to beat Danny Taylor and put the Stingrays up 1-0 over the Gladiators.

The first period would end with the Stingrays still leading by one over Gwinnett. The Gladiators were only able to muster two shots on goal in the first period.

The Gladiators put together a better second period, as they were able to fire a total of eight shots on goal. It would be the Stingrays, however, who notched the only marker of the second period. With the Gladiators on the Applebees Powerplay, Rob Ricci picked off a pass directed back to Drew Paris at the right point. Ricci and Spencer Carberry worked in on a 2-on-1, and Ricci found Carberry at the top of the crease for the shorthanded tally. The time of the goal was 18:35.

At the end of two periods of play, Taylor had already stopped 29 shots in the game. Each team was unable to convert on two power play chances in the period.

The Stingrays struck again in the third period to increase their lead to three. Trent Campbell picked up a puck in the right corner and quickly fired a pass towards the left post. Keith Johnson was there to tap the pass into the back of the net. Gregg Johnson also assisted on the play.

The Stingrays would add one more for good measure with just over five minutes left in the game. Grant Farrell found Matt Scherer streaking up the left side of the neutral zone. Scherer worked into the attacking zone and fired a wrister over the shoulder of Taylor for the final goal of the game.

The Gladiators fall to 25-22-3-2 on the year, and the Stingrays improve to 33-15-4-5.
