Pierro-Zabotel, D'Aversa Reassigned To Wheeling

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Pittsburgh Penguins have reassigned left wing Casey Pierro-Zabotel and defenseman Jon D-Aversa from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL), it was announced on Friday.

Pierro-Zabotel, 21, recorded one assist and a plus-one rating in seven games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. His first AHL assist was recorded on January 31 against the Manitoba Moose.

The 6-2, 202-lb. left wing has posted 33 points (9+24) in 38 games with the Nailers this season. He posted a season-high nine-game point streak from December 26-January 15, and had registered 20 points (6+14) in his last 18 games prior to his recall to the Penguins.

The native of Ashcroft, British Columbia entered his first year of professional hockey having come off of a banner year with the Vancouver Giants (WHL), where the 6-2, 210-lb left wing posted a league-best 115 points (36+79) in 72 regular-season games. His 115 points shattered the Giants- single-season point record, an achievement which earned him Vancouver-s first-ever recipient of the Bob Clarke Trophy awarded to the WHL-s leading scorer. In 294 games over five seasons split between the Merritt Centennials (BCHL) and the Vancouver Giants, Pierro-Zabotel has recorded 346 points (132+214).

Pierro-Zabotel was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round (80th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

D-Aversa, 23, recorded one assist and 23 penalty minutes in 21 contests with the Penguins. He appeared in three games with the Nailers after returning from injury, and netted one goal.

The native of Richmond Hill, Ontario made his professional debut with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on October 20, 2007. He has appeared in 109 career games with the Penguins, totaling 30 points (5+25). He set career professional highs in 2008-09 with 22 assists and 23 points, finishing second among defensemen in scoring. D-Aversa also appeared in 28 games with the Nailers from 2007-2009, recording 28 points (2+26). He represented the Nailers at the 2008 ECHL All-Star Game in Stockton, CA, tallying two goals for the American Conference squad.

D-Aversa was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent on May 25, 2007.

The Nailers continue their season long seven game road trip with Friday and Saturday night games at the North Division leading Cincinnati Cyclones followed by a Sunday afternoon game at the Trenton Devils.

The Wheeling Nailers will return home to WesBanco Arena on Friday March 5th when they host the Charlotte Checkers.
