Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff recorded his second shutout of the season stopping all 36 shots from the Providence Bruins as the Manchester Monarchs skated away with a 2-0 victory at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday night.
Manchester (23-9-1-2) continues to lead the AHL with 49 points and Sunday's win also clinched the Monarchs coaching staff as the coaches for PlanetUSA at the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic on January 18-19 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine. Providence (16-17-1-0) is ranked seventh in the Atlantic Division with 33 points.
"It was a healthy break that gave the players a chance to re-energize," commented Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris on the holiday break. "The energy that Providence came out with was a barrage and we withstood it. We've known all along that Zatkoff has the ability and it comes down to seniority. He's been hungry to play and he's been a good teammate."
With 6:01 remaining in the first period, left wing Bud Holloway netted his 10th goal of the season on the power play to put the home team up by a score of 1-0. Defenseman David Kolomatis controlled the puck at the right point after an attempted clear by the Bruins defender was blocked. Kolomatis sent the puck down low to center Gabe Gauthier who let it slide to his teammate center Shawn Bates along the end boards. Bates took the puck in the left corner and sent it across the slot and past Gauthier who made his way to the front of the net. The puck went to the face-off circle where Holloway caught the puck and fired it top shelf by Bruins goaltender Kevin Regan for the early lead.
Right wing Kevin Westgarth scored his sixth goal of the season with only 3:20 gone in the second period to put the Monarchs up 2-0. Left wing Dwight King gathered the puck in the left corner and sent it down low to Westgarth. The right winger passed it out front to left wing David Meckler but it was deflected back to him for a backhand shot that beat Regan to double the home team's lead.
Zatkoff (7-2-0) collected his seventh win of the season saving all 36 shots. Regan (3-3-0) took his third loss of the season saving 23-of-25 shots.
Manchester was 1-for-3 on the power play. Providence was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
