RiverKings Hold Off Corpus Christi

December 22, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Mississippi RiverKings News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX --- Two third period power play goals were part of a four-goal night with the man advantage, helping the Mississippi RiverKings to a 5-3 victory over the Corpus Christi IceRays in Central Hockey League play in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The win was number 130 in the CHL coaching career of RiverKings' coach Kevin Kaminski, as the RiverKings remained in fifth place in the CHL Northern Conference standings with a 13-12-2 record.

Mississippi broke out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on a power play goal from Ryan Held nearly nine minutes into the game, and a blast from the point for a goal from defenseman Dane Marshall with under six minutes left in the period.

However, Corpus Christi answered in the second period with a pair of goals. Chris Richards opened the scoring just over mid-way through the middle session.

But, Matt Pierce scored his third goal of the season and first power play goal of the year nearly two minutes later at 11:58 to re-gain a two-goal margin at 3-1.

Corpus Christi was not done, however, as Ryan Bennett deflected a shot from the point for a goal with just over a minute left in the period. That made the score 3-2 in favor of the RiverKings entering the final period of play.

In the third period, the Ice Rays tied the game on a goal from R.G. Flath nearly three minutes into the contest.

But, the RiverKings responded with two power play goals later in the frame to ice the victory. Ryan Campbell netted the eventual game-winning goal with under six and a half minutes remaining for a 4-3 lead. The goal was Campbell's ninth of the year and would become his first game-winner of the year.

Bobby Chaumont provided insurance with another power play goal with five and a half minutes left for the final result.

Mississippi tied a season high of four power play goals in seven chances, while holding Corpus Christi scoreless in five chances for the night. The Ice Rays have not scored in 46 straight extra man opportunities.

Kevin Beech was the winning goaltender for the RiverKings, making 26 saves on 29 shots for his second win of the year (2-1-1). Kevin Nastiuk was the losing goaltender for the Ice Rays with a 27-save effort, as his record fell to 4-8-2 for the year.

Next action for the RiverKings will come the night after Christmas, when they travel to Bossier-Shreveport for a 7:05 PM start.

RADIO PROGRAMMING NOTE: Bob Bakken's RiverKings Report on 730 Fox Sports, KQPN-AM, normally heard Wednesday nights at 6:00 PM, will not be heard this week, due to the Christmas holiday and the team's travel home from Texas. The program returns December 30th at 6:00 PM.

Tis the season where the ground can get white with snow, but the RiverKings are looking for a white-out INSIDE their home arena on Pack the House Night on January 23rd. Fans are urged to wear white to the game for a RiverKings WHITE-OUT when they host the Missouri Mavericks. Game time is 7:05 PM.
