Bucks Move Into Third With Shootout Loss

INDEPENDENCE, MO- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League fell to the Missouri Mavericks 6-5 in a shootout Tuesday night at the Independence Event Center. The Bucks picked up a point to move into a third place tie with Texas in the Southern Conference as they fall to 13-7-5 (31 points). The Bucks finished their season-high four-game road trip with a 1-2-1 record.

Lance Monych picked up the Bucks first hat trick of the season, but it was not enough as the Bucks fell to 6-5-2 on the road.

Jeff Bes tied the game at 5-5 with 2:32 left in the third period as he struck on the power-play. The tally was Bes' ninth of the season and his 189th in his Bucks career.

Laredo led 4-3 after two periods but the Mavericks scored two straight to take a 5-4 lead until late in the third.

Tommy Lange tied the game at 4-4 just 3:34 into the third period in his first game with the Mavericks.

Karl Sellan put Missouri up 5-4 with 7:39 left in the third when he struck on the power-play for the Mavericks. Sellan has 12 points in 14 career games against Laredo.

The Bucks were outshot in the game 40-29.

The Bucks jumped out of the gates quickly when Monych scored off of a slap shot from the top of the right circle just 1:11 into the game. The goal was Monych's second in as many games, and his seventh of the season. Monych scored a goal in three of the four games on the road trip. The Bucks fall to 9-1-4 when scoring first this season.

The Mavericks (11-14-1) tied the game at 1-1 with 5:08 left in the period when Bret Tyler scored his first goal of the season just after the power-play expired.

Laredo outshot Missouri 13-12 in the first period.

The second period was a wild one as the two teams combined for five goals, with the Bucks scoring the final three to take a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes.

Bill Vandermeer and Jeff Christian scored just eight seconds apart early in the second period to give Missouri a 3-1 lead. Vandermeer scored his ninth, while Christian picked up his team-leading 11th of the season.

The Bucks would then strike for three straight goals, including two in 31 seconds by Monych to re-take the lead from the Mavericks.

Monych cut the lead to 3-2 when he jammed in a power-play goal right in front of the Mavericks net at the 8:21 mark.

31 seconds later Monych would pick up the Bucks first hat trick of the season when he gave Laredo a 3-2 lead at the 8:52 mark.

Darryl Smith put the Bucks ahead 4-3 with seven minutes left in the period when he scored a shorthanded goal from the bottom of the right circle on a two-on-two break. The strike was Smith's team-leading 12th of the season, and his first shorthanded.

Laredo was outshot in the second period 18-8.

Kyle Gajewski stopped 34 shots as he fell to 0-2 in shootouts this season, while Doug Groenstege set aside 24 attempts to get the win.
