December 17, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

Despite two Mitch Wahl goals the Spokane Chiefs dropped a 3-2 decision at home to the Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday night. Portland's victory allows them to jump back over Spokane into second place in the U.S. Division with 45 points. The Chiefs sit in third place with 44 points and three games in hand.

Wahl started the scoring at 3:25 of the first with his 12th goal of the season on a wrist shot from the slot. Kyle Beach and Brenden Kichton assisted on the goal.

Portland's Ryan Johansen drove to the net and tipped in a Brad Ross shot from the right post and tied the score at 10:30 of the first.

It would remain deadlocked until the Winterhawks Stefan Schneider scored at the end of a Spokane power play to put Portland on top at 14:17 of the second.

Wahl evened it up at 4:41 of the third. The 19-year-old carried the puck into the high slot on a three-on-two and, using the defenseman as a screen, snapped it past Portland's Ian Curtis.

A power play goal, the first given up by the Chiefs in six games, by Nino Niederreiter was the game winner for Portland at 13:50 of the third.

The Chiefs were 0-5 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill.

Spokane outshot Portland 33-22.

One game remains for the Chiefs before the Holiday break as they welcome the Seattle Thunderbirds to the Arena on Friday night at 7:00. Friday night is Water Stewardship Night presented by the City of Spokane and Spokane's River 99.9.

Tickets for all home games are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
