LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

Vs. Worcester (12/11): Center Marc-Andre Cliche and left wing David Meckler both scored two goals apiece as the Manchester Monarchs defeated the Worcester Sharks, 6-3, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. Along with Cliche and Meckler's tallies, left wings Dwight King and Bud Holloway found the back of the net for the Monarchs. The Sharks picked up scoring from defenseman Jason Demers (2) and left wing Brandon Mashinter. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (13-6-2) picked up his 13th win of the season by stopping 46-of-49 shots. Sharks netminder Alex Stalock (13-7-1) dropped his seventh game of the season with 20 saves on 25 shots. Manchester was 1-for-5 on the power play. Worcester went 1-for-1 with the man advantage.

Vs. Lowell (12/12): The Manchester Monarchs comeback fell short as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Lowell Devils at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. The Monarchs Care Foundation and the U.S. Marines collected over 100 large bags filled with toys from fans for Toys For Tots. Left wing David Meckler and center Gabe Gauthier scored for the Monarchs. Defenseman Olivier Magnan, right wing Matt Halischuk and defenseman Rob Davison gave the Devils the win with three first period goals. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (13-7-2) took the loss with seven saves on 10 shots. Manchester's netminder Jeff Zatkoff (6-2-0) stopped all 13 shots he faced in the final two periods of play. Devils goaltender Mike McKenna (9-6-0) earned his ninth win of the season stopping 24-of-26 shots. Manchester was 1-for-6 on the power play. Lowell went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

At Providence (12/13): Goaltender Jonathan Bernier made 36 saves for his third shutout of the season as the Manchester Monarchs blanked the Providence Bruins, 2-0, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday evening. Center Corey Elkins and right wing Richard Clune tallied for the Monarchs. Bruins netminder Kevin Regan (2-2-0) took his second loss of the season stopping 22-of-24 Manchester shots. Manchester was 0-for-3 on the power play. Providence also went 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

NEWS & NOTES

The Manchester Monarchs (20-8-1-2) added two more wins to their record this weekend to move themselves into first place in the AHL and they became the first team in the league to collect 20 wins this season.

The Monarchs are 12-3-0-1 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season with their only regulation losses coming at the hands of the Hershey Bears on Saturday, November 7 in a 4-1 loss, a 2-0 shutout to the Portland Pirates on Wednesday, December 2 and a 3-2 loss to the Lowell Devils on Saturday, December 12. Manchester won their first six home games this season.

Manchester's four-game win streak was snapped on Saturday with their loss to Lowell but they have a record of 8-2-0-0 in their last 10 games.

The Monarchs penalty kill is ranked third in the AHL. They have given up 14 goals in 132 attempts when their opponent has had the man advantage.

Their power play is ranked seventh in the league with 24 goals on 125 opportunities with the man advantage.

Manchester has been outshot by their opponent in 23-of-31 games thus far this season.

The Monarchs are 11-0-0-0 when scoring the first goal on home ice.

Manchester is also undefeated on home ice when playing on Fridays this season with a record of 6-0-0-0.

The Monarchs shutout their opponent for the 69th time in team history when they blanked the Providence Bruins, 2-0, on Sunday.

Centers Gabe Gauthier (5-14=19) and Corey Elkins (8-11=19) are tied for first place on the Monarchs roster with 19 points each.

Gauthier leads the Monarchs with 14 assists.

Elkins' eight goals are tied with center Oscar Moller (8-10=18), who is currently recalled with the Los Angeles Kings, and left wing Bud Holloway (8-7=15) for the team lead.

Moller and Holloway's three game-winning goals each are tied for ninth place in the AHL.

Moller is also tied with right wing Scott Parse (2-9=11), who is also up with the Los Angeles Kings, defenseman David Kolomatis (1-8=9) and right wing Kevin Westgarth (5-6=11) for the team lead in the plus/minus category with a plus-8.

Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (6-11=17) leads Monarchs blueliners with 17 points.

Center Marc-Andre Cliche recorded two goals and an assist on Friday night to move him into eighth place on the Monarchs roster with 11 points (6-5=11).

Left wing David Meckler is on a four-game point streak with five goals and one assist for six points.

Defenseman Alec Martinez's (3-2=5) three-game goal scoring streak came to an end on Friday, December 11 when Worcester held him off the scoreboard.

Rookie left wing Dwight King (2-3=5) has recorded five points in five games since being called up from Ontario on December 1.

Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has a record of 14-7-2 in 23 games of the season. His 14 wins are ranked second in the AHL.

Bernier's three shutouts are also tied for third in the AHL.

Bernier is ranked fourth in the league with a 1.96 goals-against-average and is ranked third with a .942 save percentage.

In eight games with the Monarchs, netminder Jeff Zatkoff has a 6-2-0 record. He is tied for ninth in the AHL with a 2.15 goals-against-average and a .940 save percentage which is ranked fourth in the AHL.

MONARCHS PROMOTIONS

Holiday Celebration/Teddy Bear Toss - The first 2,000 fans to the Monarchs game on Saturday, December 19 when they host the Lowell Devils will receive a Monarchs scarf. During the first intermission, toss a stuffed animal onto the ice for children in need.

MONARCHS IN THE COMMUNITY

Catholic Medical Center - Two Monarchs players and Max will be at Catholic Medical Center on Tuesday, December 15 to meet fans in the cafeteria. Max will be there from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. and the players will be there from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Youth Hockey - Two Monarchs players will be assisting with a MRYHA practice at Sullivan Arena on Tuesday, December 15 from 8:15-9:15 p.m.

Coat Delivery - Two Monarchs players will help E&R Cleaners deliver coats collected during the Teaming Up For Warmth Coat Drive to the Manchester Community Resource Center on Wednesday, December 16 at 2:30 p.m.

MONARCHS TRANSACTIONS

12/10/09: The Manchester Monarchs (AHL) signed defenseman Doug Nolan to a professional tryout agreement.
