Third Period Surge Leads Hawks 5-2 Past Lancers

November 25, 2009 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Omaha Lancers

J.T. Brown registered two goals while Waterloo captain Brock Montpetit popped in a goal and 2 assists as the Black Hawks downed the Omaha Lancers 5-2 Wednesday evening at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. With the loss, the Lancers dropped to 15-3 on the year but remain atop both the West Division and USHL standings with 30 points. The loss ended Omaha's 6-game home winning streak.

Omaha grabbed the game's opening marker just past the midway point of the first period when Matt White won a battle for a loose puck in the goal crease in stashing home his team-leading 12th goal of the season. With the goal, White extended his league-leading point streak to 14 consecutive games and has now recorded the longest point streak in the USHL over the last five seasons. CJ Ludwig and Seth Ambroz earned the two assists on the power play marker notched 11:57 into the opening period. The lead was short-lived, however, as less than two minutes later Waterloo evened the contest at a goal apiece thanks to Nick Sorkin's power play marker from Dan Sova 13:40 into the period.

The Black Hawks grabbed the only goal of the middle stanza as Montpetit roofed a perfect right wing wrist shot over the left shoulder of Lancers goaltender Joe Phillippi for his 6th goal of the season. Sorkin and Sova earned the two assists on the man advantage tally scored 7:52 into the frame.

The Lancers got the game even though just four and a half minutes into the third when, in the midst of Omaha's 4th power play of the game, Troy Power fired home his 5th goal of the season. Waterloo bounced right back though and notched three unanswered tallies to seal the 5-2 road victory. Brown and Tyler Zepeda scored just 15 seconds apart and Brown put the final nail in the coffin with an empty net goal 17:25 into the period.

Waterloo goaltender CJ Motte earned the victory in net thanks to 33 saves on 35 Omaha shots while Phillippi suffered his first career USHL defeat after 20 saves on 24 Black Hawks shots.

The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening for a Thanksgiving Day date with the Des Moines Buccaneers.
