Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals have added another key element to their full-time staff, announcing that former Major League Pitcher and current City Councilman, Scott Bailes will join the club as the Manager of Market Development. Bailes, who pitched in the major leagues for nine seasons over a 13-year career, will help lead the Cardinals Marketing and Sales department in corporate and ticket sales efforts along with being a Cardinals ambassador throughout the community and assisting with special projects for the team.
"My dream when playing in the big leagues was to be a part of the Cardinals organization and now I am. I'm very excited to be a part of something that is so very special, especially in my hometown," said Bailes. I'm looking forward to this wonderful opportunity."
Scott, a Parkview (Springfield, MO) High School graduate, attended Southwest Missouri State University, where he played baseball. In January 1982, Scott was drafted in the 7th round by the Texas Rangers, however he chose to remain at SMS and played through the spring of that year. In June, 1982, he was drafted by the Pittsburg Pirates in the 4th round and signed with them on July 1 and eventually was traded to the Cleveland Indians. The left-hander would win ten games for the Indians along with seven saves in his rookie season of 1986. He would also go on to play for the California Angels and eventually finished his career with the Texas Rangers, retiring in 1998. Overall, Bailes went 39-44 with a 4.95 ERA, appearing in 343 career games.
A prominent member of the Springfield community, Bailes is an elected official of the Springfield City Council, representing Zone 4. Among owning several businesses over his career, Scott also worked for Conco Companies for five years and then for Regional Ready Mix for another five years, serving as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing. The left-hander has also paired with Ned Reynolds and provided color for Springfield Cardinals television broadcasts over the last five years on KY3 and the Ozarks CW.
Scott currently serves on the advisory committee for Champion Athletes of the Ozarks and serves on the board of the Springfield Soccer Club. Scott previously served as the Director of the Special Olympics from 1994 to 1995.
"The addition of Scott to our staff is very exciting," said Cardinals Vice President/General Manager, Matt Gifford. "Scott is a great community leader and his baseball background makes him a terrific fit for the Cardinals' family."
IT'S UNAMIMIOUS, ALBERT MVP AGAIN!
Albert Pujols added more hardware to his already impressive resume by claiming his second consecutive National League Most Valuable Player.
Award and third of his career, making him the 10th player in eight decades of the award to win that many. The unanimously selected Pujols batted.327 with 47 HR and 135 RBI. He led the National League in runs scored, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, intentional walks, OPS (statistic that combines on-base percentage and slugging to classify offense production), and for the first time in his career, homeruns.
