November 16, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL) Portland Pirates

The Pirates posted a 1-1-1-0 record in three "road- games last week. The highlight of the three-game set was a 6-3 win over the Rochester Americas at HSBC Arena in Buffalo on Thursday. The win ended Rochester's franchise-record tying 11 game winning streak.

Portland, now 6-10-1-0 on the season, has a busy week ahead with four games in five days. The Pirates face the Norfolk Admirals on Tuesday at the CCCC, before traveling to Worcester to play the Sharks at the DCU Center in the first half of a home-and-home series Wednesday. The two teams complete the series Friday at the CCCC before Portland wraps up this week's action on home ice Saturday against Norfolk.

Last week's play began with a 6-1 loss in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton against the Penguins on Wednesday. Mark Mancari netted the lone Pirates goal, spoiling John Curry's shutout bid with less than three minutes remaining in regulation.

The following night the Pirates played at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY and posted a 6-3 victory over the Rochester Americans. Paul Byron ignited a four-goal second period with a shorthanded score to help lift Portland to victory and end the merks' winning streak. Philip Gogulla, Derek Whitmore, Cody McCormick and Kyle Wanvig also scored in the second for the Pirates. Mancari rounded out the Portland goal scoring and joined Gogulla and McCormick with a goal and an assist in the game. Tyler Ennis added a pair of helpers to the Pirates cause. The Amerks outshot the Pirates 26-24 in the game as Jhonas Enroth, re-assigned to Portland earlier in the day, posted the victory.

Sunday the Pirates suffered a 5-4 overtime loss to Bridgeport. The Pirates forced the extra five minutes by scoring twice in 68 seconds midway through the third period to erase a 4-2 Sound Tigers lead. Jeff Cowan, with his second of the game, and Travis Turnbull struck in quick succession to send the game into extra time. Mancari also scored a goal for Portland, extending his goal-scoring streak to three games, while Nathan Gerbe, in his first game back after missing four games due to injury, collected two assists. Mark Wotton secured the extra point for the Sound Tigers, scoring with 1.7 seconds remaining in overtime.
