Edmonton, AB.: The Edmonton Oil Kings let one slip away against the Calgary Hitmen. The Oil Kings were up a goal for close to two periods before the Hitmen scored twice in the final two minutes of the game to pull off a 3-2 victory. The Oil Kings almost stole a win shorthanded as they started the game with only 17 skaters due to the flu and injuries. The Central Division leading Hitmen have now beaten the Oil Kings in all four games this year."It's a tough one," said Head Coach Steve Pleau. "We got a late penalty and lost all our momentum but I am not going to let that get us down. There were a lot of positives tonight and we will keep moving forward."
The Hitmen got it going first when the WHL's top scorer Brandon Kozun found the net behind Oil Kings starter Cam Lanigan. The Calgary native started back to back games for the first time this season. Torrie Jung, the Oil Kings other goalie, was in the building for emergency purposes, but not on the bench due to the flu. Edmonton's Captain Rhett Rachinski scored his third of the year late in the frame to even the score at 1-1 after one period.
The Oil Kings earned the lead in the second when Adrian Van de Mosselaer had his point shot bounce off a leg and right to Michael St. Croix, who put the puck it in the open side on Hitmen starter Martin Jones. That was the third of the year for the rookie and he now has scored in back to back games.
The WHL's top ranked power play struck late in the third when Hitmen Matt MacKenzie tipped a shot past Lanigan to even the score at 2-2. Michael Stone stunned the Oil Kings when he scored the winner under a minute later to give the Hitmen a 3-2 win. The third place Oil Kings (7-10-0-3) are now nine points back of Calgary (14-5-0-0) in the Central Division.
The Oil Kings road trip is off to BC for three games in three nights. The Oil Kings play the Kamloops Blazers Friday, the Chilliwack Bruins Saturday and the Vancouver Giants on Sunday.
