Victoriaville Tigres' Tomas Kubalik Named CHL Player Of The Week

November 3, 2009 - Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)

Toronto, ON - The Canadian Hockey League today announced that forward Tomas Kubalik of the Victoriaville Tigres is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 1. Kubalik recorded 11 points including four goals and seven assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-7 in four games.

Kubalik's week was highlighted by an eight-point game Friday night in an 11-2 win over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. He scored one goal and added seven assists as first star of the game. The eight points was a career high for Kubalik but the seven assists tied a Tigres' record for most assists in a single game established by both Carl Mallette and Matthew Lombardi in the 2000-01 season. He followed that performance with another first star game on Sunday when he scored two goals including the game-winner to beat the Shawinigan Cataractes 3-2 in overtime. Earlier in the week, Kubalik had a single goal in a 5-4 loss to the Val d'Or Foreurs Wednesday, and was held scoreless despite an 8-5 win over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Tuesday.

Kubalik, a 19-year-old from Plzen, Czech Republic, is playing in his first QMJHL season with the Tigres after being selected ninth overall in the 2007 CHL Import Draft. With 24 points in 17 games, Kubalik is a prospect of the Columbus Blue Jackets selected in the fifth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Also considered this week from the OHL's Owen Sound Attack is forward Marcus Carroll who scored three goals and seven assists for 10 points in three games. He had two four-point games and tied an Attack franchise record for most games played in a career with 264. Defenceman Stefan Elliott of the WHL's Saskatoon Blades was also considered after scoring two goals with four assists for six points in four games registering an impressive plus-minus rating of plus-8.
