Crew Begins Work on Playing Surface

October 28, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL) Fort Wayne TinCaps

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps' grounds crew stayed busy Wednesday as it began off-season maintenance work on the Parkview Field playing surface. Tasks include grading the infield, widening the bullpen mounds and replacing patches of sod.

"We take pride in our field being among the best in professional baseball, especially since moving to Parkview Field," TinCaps president Mike Nutter said. "To keep it in top condition, we have to be proactive and perform maintenance like this."

The grounds crew, headed by TinCaps Director of Field Maintenance Mitch McClary, worked Wednesday on grading the infield.

"By grading the infield, we're trying to improve drainage," McClary said. "This field can already take a lot of water, but there's always room for improvement."

The pitcher's mound from the left-field bullpen has already been removed; the mound from the right-field bullpen is soon to follow. In 2010, the mounds will be built wider to make it easier for two pitchers to warm up at the same time.

In addition, patches of sod are being replaced in high-traffic areas near the main pitcher's mound, home plate, first base and the second baseman's position.

In coming weeks, the grounds crew will grade the warning track surrounding the field and take down the backstop net.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps' 2010 schedule is now available. Visit TinCaps.com for more information.
