Lumberjacks Sign Tom Galvin

MUSKEGON, MI.--- Having compiled a 2(1-1-0) record through the completion of the International Hockey Leagues inaugural weekend last weekend, the Muskegon Lumberjacks have continued their ongoing process of solidifying and stabilizing their blue line. For the second time this week, Muskegon has moved swiftly in this department to address their goals against attention prevention.

On this date, the Lumberjacks General Manager / Governor Tim Taylor has announced that Muskegon has agreed to terms with veteran defenseman TOM GALVIN with the latter inking a pact with the Jacks for the 2009-10 IHL season. Adhering to club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

GALVIN, 29, is launching his seventh pro season as he actually commences his second tour of duty on the Muskegon backline. The 5-10, 195lb right hand shooting rearguard is coming back to Muskegon after spending the past three seasons patrolling the blue line for the nearby AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. the 2008-09 campaign with the Griffins, he logged heavy duty service on the Griffins defense, recording 15-points in 71-games on 2-goals, 13-assists while accruing 40-PIM. In the Calder Cup Playoffs, he continued to be a real rampart on the GR defense, engineering 3-points in 10-games on 1-goal, 2-assists, collecting 8-PIM.

GM Taylor expects the former Notre Dame standout to augment the Lumberjacks defensive corps considerably. We think Tommy will come in here and do an outstanding job for us. His credentials are impeccable as he brings to us much invaluable experience from the extended time that he played in the AHL. That experience, in combination with his overall talent, should make him a real asset on our club and especially on the blue line.

In the 2007-08 campaign, the Staten Island, NY American-bred earned the distinction of being Grand Rapids best plus player at +10, amassing 17-points in 75-games on 1-goal, 16-assists and 46-PIM.

Galvin actually found his way to the Griffins during the 2006-07 season when he was performing his craft under the employ of the then UHL Muskegon Fury. Some 14-games into his second season in Muskegon, he was summoned to the AHL club and remained for three seasons until his return here today.

Originally Muskegons #2 choice in the March 2004 UHL North American Amateur Draft following a stellar four-year collegiate career at Notre Dame, Galvin, instead, opted for the ECHL, playing for Atlantic City and Reading of the ECHL. However, in the following season of 2005-06, he signed with the UHL Quad City Mallards only to be traded to Muskegon in a major four-player trade in February of 2006.

In that 2005-06 season, Galvin truly excelled on the Muskegon backline; in particularly in the playoffs. In that post-season, he emerged as the leagues third top scoring defenseman with 8-points in 12-games on 2-goals, 6-assists with his 2-snipes equaling the league playoffs top mark.

In his total pro career, Galvins numbers are: 347-games; 14-goals, 92-assists, 106-points, 259-PIM.

His best offensive season at Notre Dame came in the 2001-02 season when in 38-games, he authored 23-points on 4-goals, 19-assists and 28-PIM. His Fighting Irish career totals read: 142-games; 8-goals, 50-assists, 58-points, 113-PIM.

Tom Galvin will wear #28 and will mark his second coming on the Muskegon defense this Friday night, October 23rd at 7:00 pm when the Lumberjacks play host to the Dayton Gems on Jock Callander Retirement Jersey Night and $1 Beer Night.

This is his 7th pro season and his third stint in Muskegon. Signed by the Lumberjacks as a free agent on 10/22/09. Played the past two seasons in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins. In 2008-09, registered 15-points in 71-games on 2-goals, 13-assists with 40-PIM. In the playoffs, in 10-games added 3-points on 1-goal, 2-assists. In the 2007-08 campaign with the Grifs, was the teams best plus player with +10 rating and recorded 75(1-16-17) and 46-PIM. In the 2005-06 season with Muskegon of the UHL, appeared in 12 of the teams playoff games, leading the team and ranking #3 overall in the league in scoring by defense-men with 12(2-6-8). His 2-goals tied for the UHL playoffs best. Originally was Muskegons #2 choice in the 2004 UHL North American Amateur Draft from Notre Dame. Prior to pro career, enjoyed an outstanding four-year career at CCHA Notre Dame where in 2001-02 topped all Fighting Irish defensemen in scoring with 38(4-19-23) and 28-PIM.
