Hall Of Fame Fight Night This Saturday

October 14, 2009 - Texas League (TL) Corpus Christi Hooks

ENTERING THE HALL - Two trainers and a former world title contender will be inducted into Corpus Christi's Boxing Hall of Fame this Saturday evening at Whataburger Field during the first Hall of Fame Fight Night. Harold Ray Warren, who won 43 bouts, 21 by knockout, during a 16-year professional career, was introduced to the media Wednesday along with former trainers Bobby Garza and Emilio Sanchez. The trio will be inducted into the Hall shortly before 9:00 p.m. in the midst of Saturday's fight card.

THE MAIN EVENT - Brandon Rios (21-0-1), ranked 10th in the world in the super featherweight division, battles Manuel Perez (14-4-1) in a 10-round bout to headline Saturday's event, which will be televised by Azteca America. Corpus Christi's own Jerry Belmontes (9-0) puts his unbeaten mark on the line against Aduato Gonzalez (11-7) of Mexico, while another local product, Alfonso Lopez (16-0), takes on Craig Ganty (7-4-1).

THE SEARCH FOR A SKIPPER - The Houston Astros are in the process of interviewing candidates for their vacant managerial post in 2010. Dave Clark, who served as interim manager for the final 13 games this year and guided the Hooks during the club's first three seasons, interviewed for the job today along with Al Pedrique, who served as the organization's minor league field coordinator this year. Ned Yost, former Milwaukee skipper, and Randy Ready, San Diego's hitting coach and former San Antonio manager, are slated for interviews in Houston Thursday.

BAILEY TO CORPUS CHRISTI? - According to an article in the Houston Chronicle, Mark Bailey, the bullpen coach for the Astros for the past eight seasons, will be Corpus Christi's hitting coach in 2010. The Astros have made no formal announcement concerning the Hooks' coaching staff for next year.
