Bridgeport Islanders News Release
Bridgeport, CT -- Andrew MacDonald scored the game winning goal 2:54 into overtime and Sean Bentivoglio added a goal and two assists as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers posted a 4-3 victory over the Lowell Devils in the season opener for both teams Saturday night at a sold out Arena at Harbor Yard.
Trevor Smith got the Sound Tigers off to a good start, opening the scoring just 38 seconds into the game. Dustin Kohn put an initial shot on goal that was turned aside by Gerald Coleman but the hard rebound landed right on Smith's stick and he backhanded it into the top of the net.
Lowell tied the game midway through the period when Eric Castongauy snapped home a loose puck in the slot at the 12:19 mark. The game would remain tied through the end of the first period.
Tyler Haskins put Bridgeport back on top early in the second period, wristing a shot past Coleman. However, Lowell tied the game again when Tim Sestito cleaned up a rebound with 2:04 left in the middle period.
Bentivoglio made it 3-2 Bridgeport just over one minute into the third period. Tyler Haskins sent a centering pass out of the corner that Bentivoglio corralled in the slot and snapped a shot that found the back of the net.
Lowell fought back to even the score again at the 8:10 mark when Ben Walter poked a rebound through Scott Munroe's legs after Munroe stopped Walter's first attempt.
The game winner was set-up when Bentivoglio dropped a pass back to MacDonald at the blue-line and the defensemen one-timed a shot through the legs of Lowell goaltender Gerald Coleman for the victory.
Munroe made 33 saves to earn the win for the Sound Tigers while Coleman stopped 23 shots for Lowell.
The Sound Tigers return to the ice Friday, October 9th, when they host the Worcester Sharks at 7:00 pm at the Arena at Harbor Yard. For tickets please call 203-334-GOAL.
