Dragons Announce August Players of the Month

DAYTON, OHIO-The Dayton Dragons announced the winners today of the 1410 ESPN Radio Hitter and Pitcher of the Month awards for August. Fans selected the winners through on-line voting at www.daytondragons.com.

Outfielder Alex Oliveras was selected as the Dragons Hitter of the Month while right-handed pitcher Mark Serrano was selected as Pitcher of the Month.

Oliveras hit a team-leading .358 with two home runs and 14 RBI during the month of August. He led the team in runs scored (20), base hits (34) and slugging percentage (.505) for the month. Since joining the Dragons in July, Oliveras is batting .317 in 31 games. He was the Cincinnati Reds ninth round draft pick in 2007 out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and High School.

Serrano made six starts for the Dragons in August, going 2-1 with a 2.08 earned run average. Opposing batters combined to hit just .180 against Serrano for the month. Serrano has pitched in 11 games since joining the Dragons and is 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA. He was the Cincinnati Reds sixth round draft pick in 2009 out of Oral Roberts University.

The other nominees for the month of August were Humberto Sosa and Carlos Mendez for the Hitter of the Month, and Donnie Joseph and Jordan Hotchkiss for the Pitcher of the Month.

The winning players will be honored at a Player of the Month media luncheon on Friday, September 4th at Fifth Third Field at 1:00 p.m.
