Trenton falls to New Hampshire, 8-5

(Trenton, NJ)- New Hampshire Outfielder Nick Gorneault hit a home run for the second straight day, and the Fisher Cats defeated Trenton 8-5 on Monday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton finished the season-series 10-5 against New Hampshire. New Britain won its sixth straight game on Monday, and coupled with Trenton's loss, the Rock Cats now lead the Thunder by three games in the battle for second place in the Northern Division.
New Hampshire (58-69) scored three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. With Third baseman Al Quintana at second base and Center fielder Darin Mastroianni at first base, Gorneault hit a three-run home run off of Thunder Starting Pitcher Zach McAllister (6-5) to give the Fisher Cats a 3-0 lead. New Hampshire tacked on a run in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Designated Hitter Scott Campbell. New Hampshire made it 5-0 in the sixth inning on an RBI double by First baseman David Cooper. The Thunder countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out in the frame, Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci connected on a two-run single to cut the New Hampshire lead to 5-2. But, New Hampshire scored three times in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 8-2. An error by Trenton Shortstop Eduardo Nunez allowed two Fisher Cats runs to score in the inning. Trenton (63-64) plated a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Center fielder Austin Krum. The Thunder scored two runs in the ninth inning. Designated Hitter Noah Hall had an RBI single, and Outfielder Edwar Gonzalez drove home a run with an RBI groundout.
Trenton Starting Pitcher Zach McAllister (6-5) only lasted three innings. The start was his second shortest of the season. He yielded four hits and four runs to take the loss. New Hampshire Starting Pitcher Adrian Martin hurled 5 1/3 to pick up his first win since July 16th. He scattered six hits and two runs. Vechionacci had three hits in the loss. It was his first three-hit game of the season. Catchers P.J. Pilittere and Ryan Baker each had two hits for Trenton.
Trenton starts a three-game series in Altoona on Tuesday night. RHP Ryan Pope (5-10, 4.76) will start for Trenton against Altoona RHP Tim Alderson (8-1, 3.57). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday night from Blair County Ballpark.
